How do I clear black vertical lines or streaks from printed documents?

Description of Solution 200000034678

To determine if the black vertical lines appearing on the printed documents are related to a printing issue or scanner issue print the Help List by pressing the REPORTS key and then 2 on the dial pad.

- If the lines appear on the Help list continue to STEP 1.

- If the lines do NOT appear on the Help list, refer to the solution - "How do I clear black vertical lines that appear when I print a document, make a copy, send a fax or scan an image into the PC?"

1. Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

2. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum and laser glass by following the steps listed below

a. Turn off the power switch and unplug the power cord.

b. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

NOTE: We recommend you place the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case they accidentally spill or scatter toner.

c. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left and left to right several times. Return the blue tab and snap it into the home position before you put the drum/toner assembly back into the machine. If they don't, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.

d. Inside the machine on the top you will find a small depression. This is approximately 4 inches from the front of the machine. This is the glass that covers the laser unit.

e. Clean the glass with a soft DRY lint free cloth.

f. Put the drum and toner assembly back in the machine.

g. Close the front cover.

h. Plug the power back in and turn the machine back ON.

i. Print the Help list to test by pressing the REPORTS key and then 2.

- If the lines are gone, the issue is resolved.

- If the lines continue to appear on the Help List, continue to STEP 3 to clean the drum surface.

3. Check the drum unit for damage or foreign material by following the steps listed below:

a. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

NOTE: We recommend you place the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case they accidentally spill or scatter toner.

b. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the blue lock lever on the left side of the drum unit and lifting the toner out.

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on hands or clothing, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

c. Position the Help List in front of the drum unit so you can see the exact position of the drum that may be causing the problem.

d. Turn the black and white gear on the left side of the drum unit as you check the surface of the OPC drum.

NOTE: The OPC drum is photosensitive so do not touch it with your fingers.

- If there are scratches on the drum surface, continue to STEP e.

- If there are no scratches on the drum surface, go STEP f.

e. If there are scratches on the drum surface, the drum will need to be replaced.

Damage to the drum or surface of the drum is not covered as a warranty issue. The warranty does not cover any damaged caused by some foreign material or improper print materials.  You will need to purchase a replacement drum (DR350).

f. If a substance or material is on the drum surface, gently wipe the surface of the OPC drum with a lint free cloth that is lightly dampened with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.  Rotate the black and white gear on the far left side of the drum to rotate the drum and completely wipe across the full drum surface and all the way around the circumference. If the drum is still wet, allow it to dry a minute before proceeding.

g. Reset the toner into the drum (be sure it clicks into place).

h. Put the drum and toner assembly back in the machine.

i. Close the front cover.

4. Make 10 to 15 blank white copies of a plain piece of paper to further clean and condition the drum surface.

a. Place a blank sheet of paper in the ADF.

b. Press the COPY mode key.

c. Press 1, 5 on the dial pad.

d. Press START.

5. Print the Help list to test by pressing the REPORTS key and then 2 on the dial pad.

6. If the vertical lines continue to appear on the Help List clean the drum again. Repeat STEPS 3 - 4.

7. Print the Help List by pressing the REPORTS key and then 2 on the dial pad.

If the problem continues the drum must be replaced with a new genuine Brother DR350 drum.
