How do I clear the message "Jam Inside" from the display when using the manual feed slot?

Description of Solution 200000034900

1.    Is the Jam Inside error currently on the display?

-      If the error is present, go to STEP 2.

-      If the error is NOT present, go to STEP 4.

2.    Cancel any pending print jobs by pressing the CANCEL key on the control panel of the Brother machine. If a print job was sent to the queue and didn't print or was sent to the print queue in error, it may need to be deleted to allow subsequent jobs to print.

To cancel a print job in a Windows or Macintosh operating system, refer to the solution "How do I cancel print jobs using the control panel or print queue in Windows or Macintosh?"

3.    Check the machine for jammed media:

a.    Open the top cover of the machine.

b.    Remove the drums and toners from the machine by grabbing them and lifting them from the machine.

NOTE: Do not separate the toners from the drums.

c.    Inspect the toner cartridges area for media:

-      If media is found, remove it and go to STEP d.

-      If no media is found, go to STEP d.

d.    Reinstall the drums and toners in the machine.

e.    Close the top cover.

-      If the Jam Inside error has cleared and the machine has reached the Ready status, go to STEP 4.

-      If the Jam Inside error is still present, turn off the power to the Brother machine and wait 3 seconds. Turn on the power to the Brother machine.

-      If the Jam Inside error is still present, go to STEP 8.

4.    Media Specifications:

a.    Verify that the media is suitable for use in the manual feed slot:

-      Media width should be between 3" and 8.66".

-      Media length should be between 4.57" and 16".

-      Media weight should be between 16 lbs and 43 lbs.

NOTE: The use of inkjet media is NOT recommended. Inkjet media may cause damage, print quality issues or jamming issues.

b.    Labels used in the machine must be suitable for use in laser printers. Labels specifically labeled for use in inkjet machines may cause print quality issues, jamming, or machine damage. Avery #5160 or equivalent is recommended.

c.    Envelopes with windows, holes, cut-outs, or perforations should be avoided. The envelopes should not have a self-adhesive closure. The envelope must not weigh more than 43 lbs.

-      If the media does not meet these specifications, please use the correct media in order to resolve the issue before proceeding.

-      If the media meets the specifications for manual feed slot use, continue to STEP 5.

5.    When does the issue occur?

Does the jam occur when using regular media, special media (envelopes, cardstock, label sheets, etc), or both?

-      If the jam only occurs when using special media, proceed with the solution using regular 20-24 lb in order to become familiar with the machine.

-      If no media can be successfully fed through the MP tray, proceed with the solution using regular 20-24 lb media. Once regular media is successfully loaded in the machine, you can try special media in the machine.

6.    Loading the media in the MP tray:

NOTE: A video is available on the Brother-USA website that demonstrates the proper loading technique for the MP tray: http://www.brother-usa.com/videos/?VID=699

IMPORTANT: CAREFULLY READ ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS STEP BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO LOAD THE MP TRAY.

a.    With the machine at Ready status, open the manual feed slot cover.

b.    Using the both hands, slide the manual feed slot paper guides to the width of the paper, label, or envelope that you are going to use.

NOTE: REVIEW STEP c through STEP e BEFORE ATTEMPTING THE PROCEDURE IN ORDER TO FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE STEPS.

c.    Using both hands, QUICKLY place the media in the MP slot with the side to be printed face up. The machine will not be damaged if the tray is loaded quickly. Push the media into the slot until a slight "bow" is formed in the media. The media should be held in this position until you feel the machine grab the media.

d.    Once you feel the machine grab the media, release it. Failure to push the media far enough into the machine and/or releasing it before the machine actually grabs it will result in a Jam Inside error.

e.    To verify that the machine has actually grabbed the media, GENTLY pull on the media. Do not pull too hard or you may pull the media out of the tray.

-      If resistance is felt when pulling the media, the MP tray should be loaded properly.

-      If the media comes out of the MP tray easily, it may not have been inserted properly. Repeat STEP c - e.

f.     From the computer, choose the appropriate Paper Size and Media Type. Select media size Letter and media type Plain Paper.

NOTE: The Default settings are Size = "Letter" and Media Type = "Plain Paper".

-      For detailed instructions on changing your settings in a Windows operating system, refer to the solution - "How do I adjust the default preferences of my printer driver in Windows?"

-      For detailed instructions on changing your settings in a Macintosh operating system, refer to the solution - "How do I adjust the default preferences of my printer driver in Macintosh OS X?"

g.    Send the print job to the Brother machine.

-      If you are interested in printing on heavier media such as envelopes and labels, go to STEP 7.

-      If special media will not be used at this time, the issue should be resolved.

7.    Printing on Special Media:

We recommend that the fuser latches be placed in the Envelope or "down" position to prevent media curl, smearing or other potential print quality issues. The media will exit the machine in the rear instead of the top of the machine.

NOTE: If it is inconvenient to leave the rear cover open, the machine can be used with rear cover closed if media curl, jams or print quality issues do not occur or if the print quality issues are not a concern.

a.    Turn the machine around and open the back cover.

b.    Pull down the two gray levers, one on the left side and one the right side towards you.

c.    With the levers pulled down, the arrows on the gray levers will match the white arrows next to the envelope symbols.  Leave the back cover open.

NOTE: Please remember to place the envelope levers in the "Down" position when the rear cover is left open. The levers will automatically be placed in the normal position when the cover is closed.

IMPORTANT: CAREFULLY READ ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS STEP BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO LOAD THE MP TRAY.

d.    With the machine at Ready status, open the manual feed slot cover.

e.    Using the both hands, slide the manual feed slot paper guides to the width of the paper, label, or envelope that you are going to use.

NOTE: REVIEW STEP f through STEP h BEFORE ATTEMPTING THE PROCEDURE IN ORDER TO FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE STEPS.

f.     Using both hands, QUICKLY place the media in the MP slot with the side to be printed face up. The machine will not be damaged if the tray is loaded quickly. Push the media into the slot until a slight "bow" is formed in the media. The media should be held in this position until you feel the machine grab the media.

NOTE: It is very important to apply extra pressure to the envelope or other special media in order to compensate for the media thickness; else a Jam Inside error may result because the media has not been completely loaded in the MP Tray.

g.    Once you feel the machine grab the media, release it. Failure to push the media far enough into the machine and/or releasing it before the machine actually grabs it will result in a Jam Inside error.

Repeat STEP f - h.

i.      From the computer, choose the appropriate Paper Size and Media Type.

Windows users

-      When you use Envelope #10, choose Com-10 for Paper size.

For other envelopes which are not listed in the machine driver, such as Envelope #9 or Envelope C6, choose User Defined for Machine driver and PostScript Custom Page Size for BR-Script machine driver.

-      For detailed instructions on changing your settings in a Windows operating system, refer to the solution - "How do I adjust the default preferences of my printer driver in Windows?"

Macintosh users

-      When you use Envelope #10, choose #10 Envelopes for Paper size.
