How do I add a local or network printer driver on a Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 computer?

Description of Solution 200000037139

These steps assume you are installing from the software CD. Drivers may also be downloaded from http://www.brother-usa.com/downloads.

1.  For Local users, if you haven't already done so, connect the interface cable and power on the machine.

For network users, the Brother machine should first be connected to the network in order to add the printer driver.

2.  Open the Printers folder.

- Click Start => Control Panel => Hardware and Sound => Devices and Printers

3.  Depending on your connection type, make one of the following selections:

Click Add A Local Printer and continue to STEP 4.

Click Add a Network, Wireless, or Bluetooth Printer and continue to STEP 5.

4.  Select a USB port and click NEXT. The port should be USB00x. (Where x is a number).  Continue to STEP 7.

NOTE:  If there are no USB Virtual Ports to select, then either there is no communication between the Brother Machine and the computer or there is a problem with the computer's Operating System.

-  Verify the USB cable is connected properly, try multiple ports on the computer, and try another known working cable.

-  If you still do not have a USB virtual port available, try connecting the machine to another computer.

-  If the machine works on a second computer, then the issue is with the original computer's Operating System not properly loading the USB controllers.  Contact your computer manufacturer for further support.

WARNING:  Do not attempt to create a local port.  The correct ports should be automatically created by the Operating System.

5. You will see a message stating: Searching For Available Printers.  The list will populate with available printers.

6. Select your Brother machine from the list of available printers and click NEXT.

NOTE: If the machine is not found, then the computer is not communicating properly with the Brother machine.  You will need to configure the machine to communicate with your network using the initial setup instructions provided with the machine.

7.  Click HAVE DISK.

8.  Click BROWSE and specify the location of the drivers on the disc.  (Ex: x:\install\driver\gdi\32\usa)  The location will vary depending on your machine.

9.  Click OPEN.

10.  Click OK.

11.  Select the model name and click NEXT

12.  If you receive a message stating that a driver is already installed, select Replace The Current Driver and click NEXT.

13.  It is recommended that you leave the default printer name and click NEXT.

14.  Select a Printer Sharing option and click NEXT.

15.  If you want to use your Brother machine as the default printer, check Set As The Default Printer.

16.  You may click PRINT A TEST PAGE to check if your machine is working properly.

17.  Click FINISH.  The driver is now installed.

NOTE: You may receive a message stating the software has not passed logo testing.  Click CONTINUE ANYWAY.  The installation will continue until completion.
