Description of Problem 100000029204

The printed pages have a yellow background.  How do I improve the print quality?

Description of Solution 200000037541

1.  Examine the printed document.

-  If the entire page has yellow shading (all areas that should be white are actually yellow, including the background), go to STEP 2.

-  If the background is normal, but there are portions of the document that are the wrong color (areas are yellow when they should be another color), see the solution "The colors of the printed document or image are not what I expected. It does not match the computer screen. What can I do?"

2.  Power off the Brother machine. Open the top cover to access the toner cartridge area.

NOTE: Always be sure to completely open the top cover of the machine before attempting to remove or install any consumables.  The top cover is completely open when you feel it "snap" in place and does not require support from the user in order to keep it open. Failure to completely open the cover when removing or installing the drum unit may cause it to become stuck or damage the machine.

3.  Exchange the positions of the yellow and cyan or magenta drum and toner.

a.  Remove the yellow drum and toner from the machine.

b.  Remove the cyan OR the magenta drum and toner from the machine (do not remove both).

c.  Place the yellow drum and toner in the position of the toner that was removed from the machine.

d.  Place the cyan or magenta drum and toner that was removed from the machine in the yellow position.

NOTE: Do not separate the toners from the drums. Swap the toners and drums as a set.

4.  Close the top cover. Power on the Brother machine. Allow it to reach the "Ready" state.

5.  Reprint the same document.

NOTE: If the document is no longer available, a document with yellow content MUST be printed.  The colors on the reprinted document will be incorrect since the toners have been swapped.

6.  Examine the new document printed with the drums and toners switched in the machine.

-  If the background color has changed (matches the color of the drum and toner currently in the yellow position of the machine), go to STEP 9.

-  If the background color is normal or yellow, continue to the next step.

7.  The yellow toner may be responsible for the issue. Even if the machine is not displaying a "Toner Low" message, it may still be causing the issue. Replacement of the toner with a genuine Brother toner may resolve the issue.

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

8.  Return the drum and toners to their original positions.

a.  Power off the Brother machine. Open the top cover to access the toner cartridge area.

b.  Place the yellow drum and toner in the yellow position and replace the cyan or magenta drum and toner in its correct position.

c.  Close the top cover of the Brother machine.  Power on the Brother machine.

d.  Reprint the same document.

-  If the background of the page no longer has the yellow tint, the issue should be considered resolved.

-  If the issue is still present after replacing the yellow toner, continue to the next step.
