When I scan a document or make a copy, the page is all black. What can I do?

1. Print the User Settings.

 

a.  Press MENU, 6 (Machine Info), 4 (User Settings). Press START.  A User Settings report will print.

 

b. Press STOP/EXIT.

 

- If the report prints black, refer to the solution - "The printed pages are all black. How can I improve the print quality?" 

 

- If the User Settings report prints out okay, continue to the next step.

 

2. Make an ADF (automatic document feeder) copy of the User Settings report. 

 

a. Lift up and unfold the ADF document output support flap (1).  Unfold the ADF document support (2).

 

 

b. Place the User Settings report face up in the ADF.  You may need to adjust the paper guides (1) to fit the width of the report.

 

 

NOTE: After you put your document(s) in the ADF, the Brother machine's LCD should display "ADF Ready" for a few seconds.  If it does not, pull out the document and load it again.

 

c. Press START.  The machine will make a copy of the User Settings report. 

 

- If the copy of the User Settings report prints out okay, close the ADF document output support flap and the ADF document support and continue to STEP 3.

 

- If the copy of the User Settings report prints out black, place the User Settings report face up in the ADF again.  Make certain that the printed side of the report is on top.  Make another copy.

 

- If the copy of the User Settings report now prints out okay, close the ADF document output support flap and the ADF document support and continue to STEP 3.

 

- If the copy of the User Settings report still prints out black, go to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS

 

3. Make a document scanner glass copy of the User Settings report. 

 

a. Lift the document cover. 

 

b. Using the document guidelines on the left and top, place the User Settings report face down in the upper left corner of the scanner glass.

 

 

c. Close the document cover.

 

d. Press START.  The machine will make a copy of the User Settings report. 

 

- If the copy of the User Settings report prints out okay, discontinue troubleshooting.

 

- If the copy of the User Settings report prints out black, make certain that the printed side of the report is facing down.  Make another copy.

 

- If the copy of the User Settings report now prints out okay, discontinue troubleshooting. 

 

- If the copy of the User Settings report still prints out black, continue to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS
