How do I clear the "Cannot Detect" message from my Brother machine's display?

Description of Solution 200000044025

1. Verify the complete message displayed on the LCD, including the information in the yellow bar at the top of the LCD.

- If the Brother machine's LCD reads "Cannot Detect," go to STEP 2.

- If the Brother machine's LCD reads "Cannot Detect Ink Volume," refer to the solution: "My Brother machine's LCD reads 'Cannot Detect Ink Volume.' What can I do?

- If the Brother machine's LCD displays another message, refer to the solution that addresses the message.

2. Do one of the following:

-         If you are setting up the Brother machine for the first time, go to the solution:  "I'm setting up my Brother machine for the first time and the message "Cannot Detect" is displayed on the LCD. What can I do?"

-         If you are not setting up the Brother machine for the first time, continue to STEP 3.

NOTE:

     - The "Cannot Detect" message can appear if an ink cartridge has reached the end of its life.

- LC101BK, LC101Y, LC101C, and LC101M cartridges and LC107BK cartridges will give a "Cannot Detect" message as they are not designed for use in this machine. You can only use the LC103 Standard Yield cartridges and LC105C, LC105M, LC105Y and LC109BK High Yield cartridges in the Professional series.

3. Follow these steps to clear the message:

a.    Read the LCD to determine which ink colors are affected.

NOTE: The affected colors will be displayed on the right side of the LCD (Where 'Y- Yellow' is in the image below)

b.    Open the ink cartridge cover.

c.    Press down on the gray release lever(s) to release the ink cartridge(s) named in the "Cannot Detect" message.

d.    Remove the affected cartridge(s) from the machine.

4. Verify the ink cartridge(s) are compatible with you Brother machine:

a.    Verify the ink cartridge model number. The model number is located below the color icon:

-         If the model number on the cartridge is LC103, LC105 or LC109, continue to STEP 4b.

-         If the model number is LC101 C/M/Y/BK or LC107, these ink cartridges are not compatible with your model machine and the message "Cannot Detect" will be displayed if they are installed in the machine. In order to clear the message you must install a new LC103, LC105 color or LC109BK genuine Brother ink cartridge.

-         If you have a new LC103, LC105 color or LC109BK genuine Brother Ink cartridge on-hand, install the color genuine Brother ink cartridge indicated on the LCD.

NOTE:
The Brother machine must be powered on when you are installing the new genuine Brother Ink cartridge(s).

-         If the display returns to the home screen and no error is displayed, the new ink cartridges resolved the issue.

-         If the LCD continues to display "Cannot Detect" after installing a new LC103, LC105 color or LC109BK genuine Brother ink cartridge, contact Brother Customer Service by calling 1-877-BROTHER (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

b.    Verify the Brother Innobella logo is displayed on the ink cartridge label:

-         If you cannot locate the Innobella logo, continue to STEP 4c.

-         If the customer located the Innobella logo, go to STEP 4d.

c.    Your cartridges may not be genuine Brother Innobella ink cartridges. If you are not using Genuine Brother Innobella ink, the machine may not detect the ink volume and the message "Cannot Detect Ink Volume" will be displayed.

Brother strongly recommends that you use only genuine Brother ink for best results.  Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability since the ink formulation in genuine Brother ink cartridges prevent smearing and clogging of the print head.  The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that was caused by the use of third party ink and/or cartridges.

Continue to STEP 4d.

d.    Does the top of the cartridge have a small green chip/circuit board?

-         If yes, go to STEP 5.

-         If no, the chip is missing, the cartridge may be a non-Brother cartridge. Please note: Your Brother machine's ink cartridges are equipped with microchips that detect the cartridges' remaining ink volume and whether the cartridges are installed in the correct positions inside the machine.

-         If you do not have a new, genuine Brother Ink cartridge on-hand, you will need to obtain Brother genuine ink cartridges in the indicated colors.

-         If you have a new, genuine Brother Ink cartridge on-hand, install the color genuine Brother ink cartridge indicated on the LCD and return to STEP 3.

NOTE: The Brother machine must be powered on when you are installing the new genuine Brother Ink cartridge(s).

-         If the chip is missing and the cartridge is a Brother genuine ink cartridge please contact Brother Customer Service by calling 1-877-BROTHER (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

5. Examine each ink cartridge you removed and locate its black Ink Sensor in the Ink Sensor Window.

-         You must hold the ink cartridge upright as shown in the images below.

NOTE: The images below show an LC103 cartridge.  The LC105 and LC109 series cartridges are similar, but have a higher ink volume.

a.    Can you see the black Ink Sensor in the Ink Sensor Window?

NOTE: If you are not sure where the Ink Sensor should be, remove one of the ink cartridges that is not designated in the "Cannot Detect" message and compare it to the cartridge you are evaluating.

-         If yes, go to STEP c.

-         If no, go to STEP b.

b.    Is the Ink Sensor Window filled with ink?

NOTE: There will be a small amount of ink left in the ink cartridge when it reaches the end of its life.  It is necessary to keep some ink in the ink cartridge to prevent air from drying out and damaging the machine's print head assembly.

-         If yes, go to STEP c.

-         If no, the cartridge has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced with a new genuine Brother ink cartridge.

c.    Slowly and firmly insert each ink cartridge (2) into its designated position (1) in the machine.

-         Each ink color's designated position is indicated by the color above the corresponding lever.

-         Install the ink cartridge in the direction indicated by the arrow on its label.

d.    Slowly and firmly push the back of the ink cartridge—marked "PUSH"—until it clicks.

e.    Go to STEP 6.

6. Close the ink cartridge cover.

-         If the Brother machine's LCD does not display an error message, the issue is resolved.

-         If the Brother machine's LCD displays "Cannot Detect," contact Brother Customer Service by calling 1-877-BROTHER (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

-         If the Brother machine's LCD displays another message, refer to the solution that addresses the message.
