Summer is here and we are headed to the beach or pool often. This is a good time to sew up various bags to have on hand for all the summer activities. I saw an adorable terry cloth bag while shopping and wanted to create my own version to use as a stylish Beach Tote Bag. These are easy to make and all you need is a couple of supplies. Get the details below on how to make your own Beach Tote Bag.
- Beach Towel
- Interior Fabric (I used an old sweatshirt, but any medium weight material will do)
- 2 Yards of Rope
- Large Eyelet Tools
- 4 x 7/16” Eyelets
- Jeans Needle
- General Cutting/Sewing Notions
- Step 1:
Cut out your materials:
Exterior Towel: 21 x 17”
Interior Fabric: 21 x 17”
Fold fabric in half. Use a grid ruler and mark off a 2 x 2” square on each bottom corner and cut.
- Step 2:
Place right sides together for both towel and liner and sew sides and bottom edges (1/2” seam allowance)
- Step 3:
Box all the corner edges by placing the seam allowances right sides together. Clip and sew.
- Step 4:
Place liner (right side out) and exterior right sides together.
- Step 5:
Sew all the way around the top edges together leaving a 3” opening (where arrow is) to flip right sides out.
- Step 6:
Flip right side out through the opening. Press top edge nice and flat.
- Step 7:
Top stitch the top edge enclosing the opening (1/4” seam allowance).
- Step 8:
Use the Eyelet/Grommet tools and follow the instructions to create Large Eyelet openings. Mine were about 7” from the side seam and 6” apart.
- Step 9:
Knot the rope through the eyelet opening. Mine was about 1 yard on each side.
Tip: If you want to pass on the Eyelet part, you can use the remaining towel fabric to create strapping and top stitch on the bag as well.
