Video Sew-A-Long: Canvas Tote Bag: Part 2: Sewing the Outside Pocket
Machine:Angela uses the ST371HD Strong & Tough Sewing Machine
to construct her bag. Feet used in this Sew-A-Long: Plastic Non-stick foot, basic Zig Zag foot for straight stitching. I hope you are as excited for this Sew-A-Long as I am! In Part 1
we gathered our supplies and cut out the pattern. In this lesson we will be sewing the Outside Pocket. My pocket is large enough for my cellphone or tablet, but remember you can customize your bag to whatever size you need! The outside pocket is a great place to add a monogram with applique or embroidery. For tips on embroidering a monogram on canvas pop over to my Video Post: Add a Custom Monogram to a Canvas Tote
. Start by layering the #3 OUTSIDE POCKET lining and canvas fabric with wrong sides together. Baste or pin the layers together. Fold the #4 VINYL TRIM piece in half and clip to the top edge of the pocket. Set up the Brother sewing machine for a straight stitch with a stitch length of 4.0 and change the foot to a plastic foot. Stitch about 1/8” from the edge of the vinyl trim. Trim off any excess vinyl from the edge of the pocket.
MARK THE CENTER BOTTOM OF THE BAGFold the vinyl in half and mark each side of the center of the fabric with a 1/8” snip. Do the same for the canvas fabric.
POCKET PLACEMENTCenter the pocket on one side of the canvas, keeping in mind the lower half of the pocket will be covered with the vinyl. My pocket is 2 ½” from the top of the canvas and 4 ½” from each side. Pin the pocket to right the canvas fabric. Stitch along the edge of the pocket.
