How to Sew Custom Bag Straps
- Brother Sews Blogger
One of my most asked about sewing projects is my handmade bag straps. I love making these custom bag straps in different colors, prints, and widths. This is a simple sewing project for beginners, and a great way to customize or jazz up a plain bag. I like the idea of simply changing the strap to go with my look instead of having a different purse for all occasions. Get the details below on how to sew your own bag strap in under one hour.
Supplies:
-Brother SE1900 Sewing Machine
-strapping 1 ¼ yd. (if you want it adjustable add another ½ yd)
-vinyl or leather scraps
-Swivel hook (1/2”)
-optional adjustable slide buckles
Step 1)
Use a small piece of paper and fold it in half.
Draft a tab that measures the width of the strapping and the bottom fold should be the width of the swivel hook.
Cut it out and it should form an hourglass shape when unfolded.
Step 2)
Draw the tab pattern on the back of the vinyl and cut out 2 pieces.
Step 3)
Fold to fit through the swivel hook.
Step 4)
Add adjustable slide buckles following the package directions if you choose to use them.
Step 5)
Clip the tab/swivel hook with the strapping end sandwiched in between. Check with your purse to make sure the length works prior to sewing. If it’s too long then trim the strapping.
Step 5b)
Step 6)
Stitch a rectangle to secure.
