How to Make a DIY Lavender Satchel

Supplies:

• ScanNCut DX
• Standard Mat
• Fabric
• Heat Transfer Vinyl
• Brother Sewing Machine (Any Model)
• Thread
• Lavender and/or Buckwheat Hulls

Have you ever wanted an incredibly simple (and highly giftable) sewing project? This is the one for you! With the ScanNCut you can quickly and easily cut out any themed design in vinyl then add to your sachet. I’ve filled these with a mixture of lavender and buckwheat hulls, but you could change and add all sorts of fillings to add a nice scent to any drawer or closet.

How-to:

1. Cut a piece of fabric (about 4 ½ x 9 ½” used here) any sort of cotton fabric leftover will work. To create shaped sachet, use ScanNCut to cut out fabric pieces in your desired shape.
2. Stitch around 3 ½ sides of your fabric, leaving a 2 ½” or so gap (large enough to turn project right side out) in the center of one side. I prefer the center as it is easier to turn, as well as being better for placing a ribbon/hanger if desired.
3. Select your pattern on the ScanNCut, and resize to approximately ½” smaller than your finished project to fill the space without being too close to the edges.

Tip: This is the ultimate scraps project! Take advantage of your ScanNCut machine’s scanner, and scan in a scrap of vinyl to use here.

4. Scan the mat to locate material, then move as needed and press OK, as well as select cut as the function. Turn half-cut on (on ScanNCut) and cut the heat transfer vinyl pattern. This will cut the vinyl but not the transfer sheet material.
5. Weed (remove) all excess vinyl from the piece in preparation of attaching to the sachet.
6. With all pieces ready, it’s time to assemble! Turn the sewn fabric right side out, taking care to get the corners turned and then press with iron. Place iron-on design and a pressing cloth over the (now turned and ironed) sachet and press until transferred with iron.
7. Fill 1/3 – ½ full of lavender and/or buckwheat hulls with lavender (acts as light filler)
8. Starting with the side that has an opening, sew closed. Note if you want a ribbon/hanger add it in the opening now, before sewing shut. Go around all sides near the edge, then trim any excess thread.



These projects are so wonderful for gifts, in your own drawers, and they last! If the scent fades you can add a bit of essential oil to freshen things up. You can also add your own hand sewn or glued embellishments or designs to take this even further! Whether you stick simple classic and quick or get really time involved, it’s a fun and practical project great for any closet.
