Runway to Reality Look 4 Peplum Top and High Waisted Skirt

Look 4 - Look Book Burdastyle Brother

History Repeats Itself

Have you ever heard the saying “history tends to repeat itself on the runway”? In fashion, there have been so many styles from centuries gone by that have made a STRONG comeback. The inspiration for this outfit came from a look seen during New York Fashion Week. I think it’s elegant, classy and perfect for the spring, summer and fall. Although this top is paired with High-Waisted Skirt, it can also be paired with a fitted pair of jeans, shorts or even a mini skirt! What’s so great about this top is that it works well with various body types.

When was the Peplum initially introduced?

Interestingly enough, the Peplum was introduced in the 19th century and it is a trend that’s here to stay! For those who do not know what a Peplum is, it’s basically an over skirt that’s attached to another garment at the waist area. It can be added to jackets, tops, skirts, swimsuits and even on dresses. Essentially, this type of adornment was meant to highlight and minimize the waist by accentuating the hips. As you may know, fashion in the 19th century was about WAIST contouring — ouch! The epitome of this era was about highlighting the female figure and this was quite the change from the flowing gowns that had been popular mid-century. Women went and still go to great lengths to cinch their waists tighter and tighter (Holy Corsets!) but the Peplum was also added to emphasize the hourglass figure on a woman. So what does this generation do? We bring back the Peplum back minus the waist cinching pain — Genius!
EDITOR’S NOTE: Peplums should start at your waist and cutting your Peplum the proper length is key for the giving the perfect hourglass effect. A Peplum that’s too short will serve to exaggerate your hips, while a Peplum that’s too long can look too overpowering. The aim is to have a Peplum hit either just above the fullest part of your hip or if you are utilizing it to camouflage the tummy area, just below the tummy. Peplums are a great way to balance your proportions when done right, and since you’ll be sewing this up yourself, you can strike the proper balance!
