6 steps to create butterfly costume
1. Make the wing pattern
Start by measuring the arm length across the back of the sweatshirt (or t-shirt). Sketch one side of a butterfly wing on pattern paper based on the measurement.

Using the bottom of the sweatshirt for guidance. Fold the paper in half to achieve symmetrical wings, then cut out the full pattern. Lay the pattern over the sweatshirt to ensure it’s the right size.
2. Cut the wing fabric
Fold the black fabric in half, aligning the right sides together. Pin the wing pattern to the fabric and cut it out. Repeat this process twice, once for the front and once for the back.
3. Add wing details
Use your Brother ScanNCut to create circles of different sizes and cut them out of the white fabric.

Similarly, draw teardrop shapes in various sizes, scan them into the ScanNCut, and cut them from the orange fabric.

Arrange the circles and teardrops symmetrically across each wing, pin them down, and sew them in place.

4. Assemble the wings
Lay the finished appliqued wings with the right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a small opening along one side for turning. Turn the wings right side out and topstitch.

5. Attach the wings to the sweatshirt
Lay the sweatshirt flat and cut open the sides and sleeves along the seamline.

Spread the sweatshirt with the arms outstretched and position the finished wings on the back.

Pin the wings to the back and the top of the sleeves, ensuring they are centered and securely placed.

Sew the wings onto the sweatshirt’s back and sleeves. Then, sew the side seams and sleeves back together with the wings tucked inside. Be careful not to catch the wings in this stitching.

6. Complete the look
Pair your butterfly top with black leggings, comfy shoes, and an antenna headband for the ultimate fluttery look.

Turn the sweatshirt right-side out for the big reveal. This costume is not only adorable but also cozy for crisp Halloween nights.
