8 steps to create your Halloween candy bag

1. Prepare your materials

Cut out your pattern pieces and iron lightweight fusible interfacing onto each one.

  • Outer fabric and fusible interfacing
  • 2 pieces - 10 ½" long x 13" wide for bag
  • 2 pieces 15 ½" long x 6" wide for straps
  • Lining fabric
  • 2 pieces 15 ½" long x 13" wide

2. Create the straps

Fold each strap in half lengthwise with the right side facing out and press. Unfold, then fold again. This time, press the raw edges in towards the center. Fold in half along the original crease and topstitch both sides of the strap ¼” in from the edge.

3. Assemble the outer bag

Place both outer pieces right side together. Sew along the sides and bottom with a ½” seam allowance.

4. Assemble the lining

Place both lining pieces right side together. Sew along the sides and bottom with a ½” seam allowance, leaving a 3-inch gap in the bottom center.

5. Box the corners

Pull one corner of the outer bag out and flatten it so that the bottom seam aligns with the side seam, forming a triangle. Measure 4” across the triangle and draw a line. Stitch along the marked line, then trim the excess fabric, leaving a ¼" seam allowance. Repeat this process for the remaining corners on the outer bag and lining.

6. Attach the straps

Turn the outer bag right side out. Mark 4¾” from each side seam along the top of the bag. Mark the front and back of the bag. On the front of the bag, align one strap with the marks, ensuring the inside edges of the strap align with the marks. Baste the strap in place and repeat to add a strap to the back.

7. Combine the layers

Insert the outer bag (right side out) into the inner bag (inside out). Ensure the straps are tucked inside. Pin the top edges together, matching the side seams. Sew around the top edge with a ½” seam allowance, reinforcing the area where the straps are attached for durability.

8. Final steps

Turn the bag right side out by pulling it through the opening in the lining. Sew the opening in the lining closed by hand or machine. Push the lining down into the outer bag, aligning the bottom edges. Press the top edge.

Now, your custom Halloween candy bag is ready to tote all the treats your little ones can gather!
