Can I connect an external telephone to the Brother machine ? (F/T, FAX/TEL)

Description of Solution 200000000510

You can connect an external telephone to the EXT jack on your Brother machine. You must then set the receive mode to FAX/TEL. In this setting, the Brother machine automatically answers every call upon completion of the ring delay (unless you answer first). Ring delay is the number of times the unit and all extension phones will ring before the Brother machine answers the call. If the call is a fax, it prints the fax. If the call is voice, it signals you with a double ring that is different from the phone company ring. The special ring is the signal for you to pick up the call. (** Note: You cannot receive voicemessages on either voice mail or an answering machine when choosing the Fax/Tel mode.) Follow the steps listed below the setup the Brother machine in FAX/TEL mode:

IMPORTANT NOTE: You cannot receive voice messages on either voice mail,an answering machine or the message center when choosing the Fax/Tel mode.

If you are using Voice Mail on the same line as the Brother machine please refer to the solution - Can I use voice mail on the same line as my Brother machine?

If you are using an answering machine on the same line as the Brother machine please refer to the solution - How do I set up a answering machine (TAD) to work on the same line as my Brother machine?

1. To put the machine in FAX/TEL mode, press the FAX mode key if it is not illuminated in green, press the MENU, 0 (Initial Setup), 1 (Receive Mode). Press the up or down arrow key to select "FAX/TEL". Press OK and then STOP/EXIT.

2. Next, you will need to set the Ring Delay. This is the number of times the unit and all extension phones will ring before the unit answers the call. An extension telephone is any telephone that is plugged into a separate wall jack on the same line as the Brother machine. If you have extension phones on the same line as the Brother machine, keep the Ring Delay default setting of 4.

a. If it is not illuminated in green, press the FAX mode key located below the display.

b. Press MENU, 2(Fax), 1(Setup Receive) and then 1(Ring Delay).

c. Press the up or down arrow key to select how many times the line willring before the fax answers (00 # 04). If you select 00, the line does not ring at all.

d. Press OK.

e. Press STOP/EXIT.

3. When your telephone/fax number is dialed, the Brother machine and allphones will ring the number of times you have selected for the Ring Delay. Once the Brother machine answers the call, it will determine if it is a fax or a telephone (voice) call by listening for fax tones (a series of beeps every 3 seconds). If your Brother machine hears these tones, it will receive the fax. If the unit does not hear any fax tones, it will assume it is a telephone (voice) call and will alert you to the call through #special# ring tones (double rings). These tones will only ring on the Brother machine (extension or an external phone will not ring). However, you can answer the call on any external or extension phone. An external telephone is a telephone that is plugged into the EXT jack of your Brother machine and extension telephone is connected to a separate wall jack. The length of time that the #special# ring tones occur is called the F/T Ring Time. Follow the steps listed below to set the F/T Ring Time:

a. If it is not illuminated in green, press the FAX mode key located below the display.

b. Press MENU, 2(Fax), 1(Setup Receive), then 2(F/T Ring Time).

d. Press the up or down arrow key to select how long (in seconds) the fax will ring to alert you that you have a voice call (20, 30, 40 or 70 seconds)

d. Press OK.

e. Press STOP/EXIT.

4. If the call is not answered by the end of the F/T ring time, the unitwill go into the receive mode in order to receive a manual fax. (If the call was a voice call and was not answered, the caller will hear the fax receive tones). If you answer the call before the Brother machine answers (during the ring delay period) and you determine it is a fax, you can transfer the fax to the Brother machine for receiving in one of the following ways:

a. Transferring a call to the Brother machine using the "Fax Receive Code":

If you answer the call on an extension phone or an external telephone connected to the "EXT" jack on the Brother machine, and hear a beep every 3 seconds (automatic fax) or silence (manual fax), press *51 (fax receive code) on the telephone key pad, wait to hear the Brother machineturn on (chirping sounds) and then hang up. If you answer a voice callon an extension an external telephone connected to the "EXT" jack on theBrother machine during the F/T Ring Time, you will hear the F/T ring tones. To release the call from the Brother machine, press #51 (telephone answer code) on the telephone keypad and you can speak to thecalling party.

NOTE: The Fax/Tel mode does not work when the power button is OFF. The Brother machine will not answer telephone or fax calls and will keep ringing. If you are at an external or extension phone, lift the handset of the phone. If it is a voice call you can speak to the caller if you hear fax tones hold the handset until Easy Receive (see the instructionslisted below for turning Easy Receive ON) turn the Brother machine ON. If you answer and the person on the other end indicates they want to send a fax, turn the Brother machine ON by press *51.

b. Automatic transfer of a fax to the Brother machine using the "Easy Receive" feature:

All fax machines are preprogrammed in the factory with an Easy Receive feature set to #ON#. When you use this feature, you don't have to transfer a fax call to the Brother machine the "fax receive code". After you answer the call on an external or extension phone, wait for the Brother machine to answer the call (RECEIVE will appear on the LCD if you are at the unit or you will hear fax tones if you answer on an extension phone) and then hang up the handset. The Brother machine willdo the rest. To turn Easy Receive ON follow the steps listed below:

i. If it is not illuminated in green, press the FAX mode key located under the LCD display.

ii. Press MEN, 2 (Fax), 1 (Setup Receive), 3 (Easy Receive).

iii.Press the up or down arrow key (located on the navigation button) toselect "ON".
