How do I clear the messages "Paper Jam" and "Pls (Please) Open Cover" from the display?

To clear the "Paper Jam" or "Pls Open Cover" error, follow these instructions:

 

1. Unplug the power cord from the AC power outlet. 

 

2. If the jammed paper is visible, gently pull it from the top of the paper cassette toward the back of the machine.

 

- If the paper remains jammed or if there is not enough paper sticking out of the paper cassette, go to STEP 3.

 

3. Open the machine's front cover.

 

4. Open the machine's top cover by pressing the blue levers on both sides of the top cover.

 

5. Pull the paper from inside the machine toward the front of the machine. 

 

- This will guide the paper along the paper path.

 

6. Securely close the top and front covers.

 

7. Plug the power cord back in.

 

8. Make sure the Recording Paper Wire Extension is installed on the paper cassette.

 

9. Reinstall the recording paper: 

 

a. Open the recording paper cover on the paper cassette by pulling it toward you.

 

b. Fan the paper.

 

c. Reinsert the paper into the cassette.

 

- The paper cassette can hold up to 200 sheets of 20lb paper.

 

d. Securely close the recording paper cover.

 

10. When the LCD returns to the date and time, print a Help List:

 

a. Press the REPORTS key.

 

b. Press 1.

 

c. Press the MENU/SET key.

 

- If the Help List prints, the issue is resolved.

 

- If the paper continues to jam, go to STEP 11.

 

11. Open the machine's front cover.

 

12. Open the machine's top cover by pressing the blue levers on both sides of the top cover.

 

- Hold the ribbon cartridge in the same position that it was in when it was inside the machine.

 

13. Verify the cartridge and the ribbon are positioned correctly:

 

- The part of the cartridge casing furthest from you should have "brother" embossed on its left side, a white knob on its left side, and a ribbed triangle in the middle. 

 

- The part of the cartridge casing closest to you should be blank and have a blue knob on its left side.

 

14. Verify the ribbon is correctly oriented in the cartridge:

 

 

- The part of the cartridge casing furthest from you should have "brother" embossed on its left side, a white knob on its left side, and a ribbed triangle in the middle. 

 

- The part of the cartridge casing closest to you should be blank and have a blue knob on its left side.

 

15. Verify the ribbon is correctly oriented in the cartridge:

 

- Hold the ribbon cartridge in the same position that it was in when it was inside the machine.

 

- The shiny side of the ribbon should be facing up and the dull side facing down.

 

- If the ribbon is not installed correctly, follow these steps:

 

a. Position the ribbon cartridge so that the black knobs are on the right-hand side and the white and blue knobs are on the left.

 

b. Lift the four knobs to remove the ribbon from the casing.

 

- Make sure the rollers do not roll off the surface you are working on once they are out of the casing.

 

c. Place the casing to the side and place the rolls horizontally on a flat surface.

 

d. Pull the four knobs out of the ends of the rolls. 

 

- There is one white knob, one blue knob, and two black knobs.

 

- The shiny roll should be in the front and the dull roll should be in the back. 

 

- The ribbon should go from the top of the dull roll to the bottom of the shiny roll.

 

e. Replace the knobs into the ends of the rolls:

 

i. Place the two black knobs into the right side of the rolls.

 

ii. Place the white and blue knobs into the left side of the rolls.

 

- The blue knob goes into the left end of the dull roll, which should be closest to you.

 

- The white knob goes into the left end of the shiny roll. 

 

- Make sure that the notches on the knobs fit into the slits on the end of the rolls.

 

f. Position the cartridge casing so that the indented arrow is closest to you. 

 

g. Place the dull roller in the holder furthest from you with the blue gear on the left side and snap it into place.

 

h. Place the shiny roll in the holder closest to you with the white gear on the left side and snap it into place.

 

i. Turn the cartridge over so that the white label is facing you. 

 

j. Turn the blue plastic gear on the side of the cartridge to remove any slack in the ribbon.

 

k. Place the cartridge in the machine with the indented arrow on the print cartridge pointing to the back of the machine.

 

 

l. Close the top cover.

 

m. Close the front cover.

 

16. When the LCD displays the date and time, follow these steps:

 

a. Press the REPORTS key.

 

b. Press 1.

 

c. Press the MENU/SET key.

 

- If the Help List prints, the issue is resolved.

 

- If the paper continues to jam and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:
