Why does my Brother machine make a grinding or clicking noise when printing?

Description of Solution 200000009340

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

1. Please unplug the power cord from the back of the machine and open the front cover.

2. Remove the drum/toner unit and close the front cover.  Place the drum unit on a drop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.

3. Plug the power cord back into the machine.

-         If grinding, clicking, squeaking, or screeching noise does not occur, proceed to STEP 4.

-         If grinding, clicking, squeaking, or screeching noise does occur, refer to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS below.

4. If the grinding or clicking noise does not occur when the drum/toner unit is removed from the printer, then the drum/toner unit is likely the cause of the noise.

5. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock lever (purple tab) on the right side of the drum unit and lift the toner out.

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wipe it off and wash with cold water.

6. Unplug the power cord from the back of the machine and open the front cover.

7. Reset the drum unit in the Brother machine.

8. Close the front cover, pressing firmly on each side until the cover clicks into place

9. Plug the power cord back into the machine.

- If the grinding or clicking noise continues, you will need to replace the drum unit (DR400).

- If the grinding or clicking noise does not continue, proceed to STEP 10.

10. Unplug the power cord from the back of the machine and open the front cover.

- if the grinding or clicking noise does not continue,  the issue is resolved.

15. Open the front cover (below the paper ejection tray) by pulling the tabs on the left and right side of the unit towards you.

a. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on a drop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.

b. Unpack the new toner cartridge. Place the used toner cartridge into the aluminum bag and discard it according to local regulations.

NOTE: Wait to unpack the toner cartridge until immediately before you install it into the machine. If a toner cartridge is left unpacked for a long period of time the toner life is shortened.

c. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

d. Remove the yellow plastic protective cover located on the front of the cartridge below the metal plate

e. Reset the toner into the drum (be sure it clicks into place).

f. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab located the top of the drum unit, from left to right several times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

g. Reset the drum unit into the Brother machine.
