Description of Problem 100000012720

When I try to print from Microsoft Word or another program, I receive a message stating: Manual Feed, No Paper, or Load Paper XX. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000016347

This issue can be caused if the paper source in the program is set to Manual feed or MP tray or if the paper size is set to a custom or special size. This can also be caused if the document you are trying to print was created as a letter, mailing, or label using the Envelopes and Labels Wizard in Microsoft Word. The document will try to print according to the rules setup in the wizard when it was created.

To troubleshoot this issue, complete the following steps:

I. CLEAR THE ERROR MESSAGE:

1. Open the Printers Folder:

-      Windows XP: Click Start => (Settings) => Printers (and Faxes).

-      Windows Vista: Click the Start button => Control Panel => Hardware and Sound => Printers.

-      Windows 7: Click the Start button => Devices and Printers.

-      Windows 8 or 8.1:

a.    Move your mouse to the lower left corner of the Desktop or Start screen.

b.    Right-click the screen and then left-click Control Panel.

c.    Under Hardware and Sound, click View devices and printers.

2. Open the print queue:

Windows XP or Vista:  Double-click on your model machine.  The Brother machine's Printer Properties window will appear.

Windows 7, 8 or 8.1: Right-click on the Brother "Printer Driver" and select See What's Printing.

3.  Cancel the Print Job:

-         To cancel all documents click Printer => Cancel All Documents (or Purge Print Documents).

-         To cancel only selected print jobs, click on the specific job to highlight it.  Then click Document => Cancel.

4.  Press Yes.  This should clear the queue.

NOTE:  You may have to make several attempts to completely clear the print queue.

5.  Right-click on the Brother printer driver and left click Printing Preferences.

6. Verify that in the Paper Source section, the dropdown boxes for "First Page" and "Other Pages" do not list MP Tray or Manual. You may choose another relevant source such as TRAY 1.

NOTE: If the driver does not have a Paper Source section, continue to STEP 7.

7. Insert paper into the Manual Feed/MP Tray and allow the print job to complete if available on the Brother machine. If there is no manual feed or MP Tray and the error message is still on the Brother machine, cycle the power to clear the message. Once the message is clear, continue to the next step.

NOTE: The instructions below are for Microsoft Word. If you are using a program other than Microsoft Word or a different version, search for the Default Paper Source and Default Paper Size settings. If you cannot locate these settings, contact the program's manufacturer for assistance.

II. VERIFY THE DEFAULT PAPER SOURCE:

To change your default Paper Source, complete the following steps. Please note that depending on your version of MS Word, the screen layouts may differ:

1. In Microsoft Word, click File or Page Layout Tab => Page Setup.

2. Click the Paper Source Tab or Paper Tab.

3. Under the sections labeled First Page and other pages ensure that MP Tray or Manual is not selected. You may choose another relevant source such as Tray 1.

4. Click OK.

5. Click Tools => (Letters And Mailings) => Envelopes and Labels or click the Mailings Tab.

6. Click the Envelopes Tab.

7. Click Options and choose the Printing Options Tab.

8. Ensure that MP Tray or Manual is not selected. You may choose another relevant source such as Tray 1 and click OK.

9. Click the Labels Tab.

10. From the Tray dropdown ensure that MP Tray or Manual is not selected. You may choose another relevant source such as Tray 1 and click OK.

11. Close the Envelopes and Labels configuration by clicking the X in the top right corner.

III. VERIFY THE DEFAULT PAPER SIZE:

To change your default Paper Size, complete the following steps. Please note that depending on your version of MS Word, the screen layouts may differ:

1. In Microsoft Word, click File or Page Layout Tab => Page Setup.

2. Click the Paper Size Tab or Paper Tab.

3. Ensure that the paper size is not set to "Custom", or any other special paper size. Unique and special paper sizes are generally not supported through the main paper tray and will attempt to automatically feed through the MP Tray.

4. Click OK.

5. Attempt to print your document again. You should no longer receive an error message.

If the issue continues refer to the documentation or the software vendor of the application you are printing from for steps on selecting the output tray from within that application.
