How do I clear black vertical lines that appear on the copies I make and images I scan into the computer?

Description of Solution 200000022020

Black vertical lines that appear on the images you scan into the computer and copies you make are typically caused by dirt or white out correction fluid on the scanner unit.  The scanner unit is the mechanism that reads in the documents that are being copied or transmitted.

1. To test, print the User Settings:

a. Press the MENU key located on the control panel.

b. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select 1. General Setup.

c. Press OK.

d. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to select 6. User Settings.

e. Press OK.

f. Press START.

g. After the User Settings has printed, press STOP/EXIT.

- If black vertical lines appear on the User Settings refer to solution - How can I improve the print quality?

- If black vertical lines do NOT appear on the User Settings, continue to STEP 2.

2.  This problem is usually resolved by cleaning the white plastic pressure bar and white plastic pad located on the underside of the document cover along with the thin glass strip and flat bed scanner glass.

3. Lift the document cover and clean the following with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol:

a. The scanner glass of the flat bed. Caution! Do not press down on the glass very hard.

b. The thin glass strip located to the left of the flat bed glass.

c. The white plastic pad located on the underside of the flatbed cover.

d. The white plastic pressure bar located to the left of the white film.

4. Close the document cover.

5. Test the machine by making a copy of a blank sheet of paper using the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) and a copy using the flat bed.

a. To make a copy using the ADF, place the blank sheet of paper in the ADF and then press START

- If there are black or white vertical lines on the copy, repeat the cleaning in STEP 3b and STEP 3d.  In addition to cleaning the scanner glass with the alcohol, run your fingertip over the glass to see if you can feel anything on it. If you feel any debris stuck on the glass, clean the glass again concentrating on that area. You may need to repeat the cleaning process 3 or 4 times to eliminate all dirt or debris on the glass.  Make a copy to test after each cleaning.

b. To make a copy using the flat bed, lift the document cover of the flat bed, place the blank sheet of paper on the scanner glass (make sure the ADF is empty) and close the document cover. Press START.

- If there are black or white vertical lines on the copy, repeat the cleaning in STEP 3a and STEP 3c. After each cleaning make a copy to test.
