How do I configure the wireless printer and install the printer driver without a cable in Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, Server 2003, 2008, 2008 R2, or 2012?

Description of Solution 200000022294

PART I: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or wireless router

Gather the following wireless network settings of your access point or router.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information.

SSID or Network Name

The name of your Wireless Network or Access Point

Network Security Key (Password)

Encryption Key, WEP Key, Passphrase

Authentication Method

Open System, Shared Key, WPA/WPA2-PSK*

Encryption Mode

None, WEP, TKIP, AES

*NOTE: The Brother machine only supports WPA2-PSK with AES.  If you are using WPA2-PSK with TKIP you will receive a connection error.

IMPORTANT:  Some access points and routers have both a primary and guest network.  Guest networks allow access to the network Internet connection, but restricts direct access to the network.  The Brother machine should be setup on the primary network and not the guest network.

If you do not have the network settings information or cannot find this information, refer to the solution - "How do I find the Wireless Security Information in Windows?"

If you need to contact your router manufacturer for assistance gathering the required information, refer to the following link to obtain contact information for common router manufacturers:

http://www.brother-usa.com/support/wireless/wireless_router_information.htm

PART II: Perform a factory reset on the printer network card

1.    Check that the front cover of the printer is closed. Turn OFF the power switch on the right side of the printer.

2.    Press and hold the GO button, and keep holding it down, as you turn on the power switch. The GO button is located on the top left side of the printer below the LEDs.

3.    Keep the GO button pressed down until all the LEDs light up and the Status LED turns off. Release the GO button. Make sure that all the LEDs turn off.

4.    Press the GO button 10 times. The Status LED will flash while the printer is reset. After the printer is reset the Status LED will be lit.

PART III: Enable the wireless printer network card

1.    Press and hold the GO button about 15 seconds.  Release the GO key when a page starts to print from the printer.

2.    Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute after connecting before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to connect to the network and receive an IP address.

3.    Print out the Printer Settings pages by pressing the GO button on the printer 3 times.

4.    On the last page, locate the Node Type near the top of the page.

-      If the Node Type is NC-7600w, IEEE 802.11b/g, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX (Active), go to STEP 5

-      If the Node Type is NC-7600w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Inactive) or Brother Brother NC-6800h, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX (Active), you will need to reset the wireless network card again, repeat PART II.

5.    Locate the IP Address in the middle and the Comm. Mode and Name (SSID) near the bottom. Verify:

a.    IP Address of the printer is a 169.254.x.x number.

b.    Comm Mode is Ad-hoc.

c.    Name (SSID) is SETUP.

d.    If the IP Address is not a 169.254.x.x number, the Comm Modes is not Ad-hoc, and the Name (SSID) is not SETUP, you will need to reset the printer network card and enable the wireless network card again, start again from PART II.

PART IV: Communicate to the printer WITHOUT a network cable and configure the wireless settings

To communicate with the printer in Ad-hoc mode, the wireless computer needs to join the printer's SETUP network.

NOTE: If you are using a third party utility to manage your wireless connections, contact the manufacturer for assistance with the following steps.

Refer to the following solution for instructions - "How do I join my computer to the SETUP wireless network?"

After connecting the computer to the SETUP network, continue to PART V.

PART V: Configure the Wireless Network Card

1.    Open a web browser. An error message will appear informing you are not connected to the internet.

2.    Enter the IP Address of the printer into the web browser screen and press ENTER.  The Brother Web Management screen will appear.

3.    Click on Network Configuration near the top of the screen.

4.    A login screen will appear. Enter the following:

Username: admin

Password: access

Then click OK.

5.    Click Configure Wireless.

6.    Change the Communication Mode to Infrastructure.

7.    Click BROWSE next to the Wireless Network Name (SSID).

8.    Select the appropriate Name (SSID) from the list and click OK at the bottom of the screen. Refer to the network settings information gathered in PART I.

9.    Leave the Channel setting as is.

10. Select the appropriate Authentication Method from the drop down list. Refer to the network settings information gathered in PART I.

11. Select the appropriate Encryption Method.  Refer to the network settings information gathered in PART I.

NOTE:

-      If WEP is selected as the Encryption Method, enter the hex code for the WEP Key 1. There is no need to enter the Passphrase for WEP Encryption.

-      If an Authentication Method other than Open or Shared is selected, then a Passphrase must be entered on the Passphrase line.

12. Click Submit at the bottom of the screen to update the printer with your wireless settings.

13. The computer should display a screen indicating the settings have been updated successfully.

14. Switch your computer BACK to your wireless access point or wireless router, rather than the SETUP network. If you need assistance doing this, refer to the following solution for instructions but select your original network instead of the SETUP network - "How do I join my computer to the SETUP wireless network?"

15. Verify the printer is now attached to the wireless access point or wireless router.

  1. Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute after connecting before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to connect to the network and receive an IP address.

  1. Press the GO button 3 times to print the Printer Settings pages.

  1. Look at the last page printed. Locate the IP Address in the middle and confirm it is assigned via DHCP.

-      If the IP Address is 0.0.0.0, the printer was not configured properly on the wireless network. Return to PART I. You must verify the network settings with your router manufacturer. One or more of the settings entered during the wireless setup were incorrect.

  1. Locate the Comm Mode near the bottom and confirm it is set to Infrastructure.

  1. Locate the Name (SSID) near the bottom and confirm it matches your access point or router.

  1. Locate the Wireless Link Status near the bottom and confirm it reads Link OK.

  1. The printer is now configured and is operating on your network.

PART V: Printer Driver Installation

Refer to one of the solutions below to install the printer driver:

"The wired or wireless printer is connected to the network. How do I install the printer driver in Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003, or Server 2008?"
