The printed pages have dots or random dots on them. How can I improve the print quality?

Use any document that shows the print quality issue, and measure the distance between the repeating dots on the page.


- If the dots are approx. every 3.7 inches (pattern repeats 4 or 5 times down the page), continue to STEP 1.



- If the dots are approx. every 30mm or 1.2 inches (12 or 14 dots on the page), go to STEP 2.




1. The drum unit is causing the issue and will need to be cleaned.


NOTE: Dots on the drum are caused by foreign material introduced to the machine and not a defect with the drum.


a. Open the manual feed slot cover in the front of the printer.



b. Using both hands, slide the manual feed slot paper guides to the width of the paper that you are going to use.




c. Using both hands, put one blank sheet of paper in the manual feed slot until the front edge of the paper touches the paper feed roller. Wait until the machine automatically feeds the paper. When you feel the paper machine pull in the paper, let go of the paper


NOTE: Make sure that the paper is straight and in the correct position on the manual feed. The paper should also have a slight "bow" in the center - this will ensure that the media has been placed far enough in the slot to be grabbed by the machine.




d. With the machine in "Ready" state, press the PLUS/UP ARROW or MINUS/DOWN ARROW key to select "Color Correction". Press the OK key.


e. Press the PLUS/UP ARROW or MINUS/DOWN ARROW key to select "Drum Cleaning".


f. Press the GO key. The printer will pull in the piece of paper and start cleaning the drum unit.


g. When the printer has finished cleaning, "Completed" appears on the LCD. Press the CANCEL key.


h. Repeat STEPS b - g two more times using a new blank sheet of paper each. Upon completion please discard the used paper.


i. Print a test print. If the dots remain after following the instructions, please call Brother Customer Service by calling 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.



2. If the dots are approx every 30mm or 1.2 inches (12 or 14 dots on the page), the toner cartridge matching the color of the dots will need to be replaced.


a. Turn off the machine's power switch located on the right side of the machine.




b. Lift the top cover using the indented handle in the center until you hear a click.




IMPORTANT: The top cover MUST be completely opened when installing or removing any consumables. Failure to completely open the top cover could make removal or installation of the consumables difficult or cause severe damage to the machine.


c. Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly of the color causing the problem.


NOTE: We recommend you place the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.



d. Push down the green labeled lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.




e. Install the new toner cartridge by sliding the toner cartridge into the drum unit by (it will click/lock into place when set correctly).




f. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the machine.




g. Close the top cover.
