How do I clear black vertical lines that appear on received faxes, internal prints and documents printed from the computer?

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

 

1. Print the Help list by pressing the REPORTS key and then 1 on the dial pad.

 

  • If black vertical lines/streaks appear on the Help list, continue to STEP 2.

 

 

2.  Unplug the power cord from the Brother machine.

 

3. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

 

4. Place the assembly on a drop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering the toner. 

 

5. Hold down the lock lever on the right and pull the toner cartridge out of the drum. 

 

CAUTION: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

 

6. Inside the drum unit there is a roller. To remove any excess toner from the roller lightly dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and gently clean the toner or debris from the roller. You may turn this roller by moving the black/white gear on the far left side.

 

Let the drum surface completely dry before you reset the toner back into the drum. 

 

 

7. Install the toner into the drum unit until it clicks into place. 

 

8. Gently rock the drum and toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute any remaining toner evenly inside the cartridge. 

 

9. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left several times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

 

 

10. Place the drum and toner assembly back into the Brother machine.

 

11. Close the front cover.

 

12. Plug the power cord back into the machine.

 

13.  Test the print quality by printing the Help List.  Press the REPORTS key located on the control panel and then press 1 (Help List) on the dial pad.

 

-         If black vertical lines do not appear on the Help List the issue is resolved.

 

-         If black vertical lines continue to appear on the Help List the drum (DR400) will need to be replaced.
