How do I clear white vertical lines or streaks on printed documents?

Description of Solution 200000027842

White vertical lines or streaks can be caused by a dirty or clouded laser glass, or dust or glue on the drum surface or use of Non Brother Toners. To identify if the laser glass or drum could be causing the issue, follow steps below.

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

1. Click on the link below to open and print a test document. The document that is printed has 4 diagonal black, yellow, magenta, and cyan colored lines.

2. Review the printed document to identify which color is missing. For example, if the white line or streak is only going through the cyan color line, then the laser glass and drum roller for the cyan color needs to be cleaned.

3. Clean the laser glass.

a. Turn off the printer power switch located on the right side of the machine.

b. Press the front cover release button and then open the front cover.

c. Hold the green handle of the drum unit. Pull the drum unit out until it stops.

d. Turn the green lock lever (1) at the left of the machine counterclockwise to the release position. Holding the green handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit and remove it from the machine.

e. Clean the laser glass of the color that is causing the problem as identified from the test pattern using a lint-free cloth. There are four laser glass cutouts for the 4 toner colors. The laser glass related to the black color is closest to the front of the machine followed by yellow, magenta, and cyan.

f. Reinstall the drum unit, make sure the green lock lever (1) is in the release position as shown below.

g. Match the guide ends (2) of the drum unit to the triangle marks (1) on both sides of the machine, and then gently slide the drum unit into the machine until it stops at the green lock lever.

h. Turn the green lock lever clockwise to the lock position.

i. Push the drum unit in until it stops.

j. Close the front cover of the machine.

k. Turn the machine on using the power switch located on the right side of the machine.

4. Print your document again. If problem continues, go to the next step to clean the drum unit.

5. Clean the drum unit.

d. Turn the green lock lever (1) at the left of the machine counterclockwise to the release position. Holding the green handle of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit and remove it from the machine.

e. Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slightly push it to unlock. Then pull it out of the drum unit. Repeat this for all the toner cartridges.

NOTE: We recommend you place the toner cartridge(s) on a clean, flat surface with a piece of paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

f. Turn the drum unit over by holding the green handles. Make sure that the drum unit gears (1) are on the left side.

g. Review the test document to identify the color causing the problem. The drum unit of the color line that has a white vertical line or streak should be cleaned. For example, if the white vertical line or streak on the test pattern is on the cyan color line, you should clean the drum unit for cyan.

h. Place the test document in front of the drum unit and find the exact position of the poor print.

i. Turn the drum unit gear which is located on the left side with your thumb or finger while also looking at the surface of the drum unit for any dust, label, or glue like substance on the drum unit roller.

j. When you have found the mark on the drum that matches the print sample, wipe the surface of the drum with a dry cotton swab until the dust or glue on the surface comes off. If unable to locate any dust or glue on the surface, wipe the entire drum surface with a dry cotton swab.

k. After cleaning the drum unit, flip the drum back to correct position and reinstall the toner cartridges into the appropriate colored section of the drum unit until it clicks into place.

l. Reinstall the drum unit, make sure the green lock lever(1) is in the release position as shown below.

m. Match the guide ends (2) of the drum unit to the triangle marks (1) on both sides of the machine, and then gently slide the drum unit into the machine until it stops at the green lock lever.

n. Turn the green lock lever clockwise to the lock position.

o. Push the drum unit in until it stops.

p. Close the front cover of the machine.
