Description of Problem 100000022416

Printed documents print ghosted, blurry, grainy, doubled, or with smudges. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000028519

Ghost printing is characterized by a repeating light mirror image of the original image or text on the page. This issue may also be described as fuzzy, blurry, grainy, or doubled print.

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

If you are experiencing ghost printing from your Brother machine, please complete the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:

1. Make sure the paper or media type you are printing on is within specification. Below is the media type supported by the machine.

- Use paper that is between 20 lb to 43 lb. If you are printing on paper that is over 28 lb, use the MP tray to print. The MP tray can be used for paper that is 20 lb to 43 lb.

- If you are printing on glossy paper that is 43 lb or more, print only 1 sheet at a time from the MP tray with back cover open.

Recommended Paper Type

Plain Paper: Xerox 4200 20lb or Hammer mill Laser Print 24 lb (90g/m2)

Recycled Paper: No specific brand recommended

Labels: Avery Laser Labels white #5160

Glossy Paper: Office Depot Brand Glossy Laser Presentation Paper 65 lb* (100g/m2)

NOTE: Do not use paper designed for inkjet printing as it may cause damage to your machine. This damage is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.

The machine is designed to work well with most types of xerographic and bond paper. However, some paper variables may have an effect on print quality and handling reliability. Always test samples of paper before purchasing large quantities to ensure desirable performance. Use neutral paper; do not use acidic or alkaline paper. Use long grain paper. Use paper with a moisture content of approximately 5%. This machine can use recycled paper that meets DIN 19309 specifications.

2. If you are printing on paper that is over 43 lb, place plain 20 lb paper in the paper tray and print your document to see if ghosting, double-printing, blurry printouts are still occurring.

- If the problem continues, continue to STEP 3.

a. Open the back cover.

b. Locate the two gray levers on left and right hand side. Verify that both levers are pulled up and not down in the Envelope position.

- If the gray levers are in the down position with the arrow on the gray levers matching to the white arrow next to the envelope symbol, then pull the gray levers up.

c. Close the back cover.

d. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to select Machine Info. Press the OK key.
