If you feel you
aren't getting the correct yield out of your toner cartridge, consider the
1. Is the toner
cartridge the Starter cartridge that came with the machine or is it a
replacement toner cartridge?
If the toner cartridge is the Starter cartridge that came
with the machine, the Starter cartridge has a lower amount of toner compared to
the Standard and High Yield replacement cartridges and does not yield as high a
page count as the replacement toners. (See below for toner yields.)
2. What types of
documents to you typically print on your machine? For example:
Spreadsheets and reports
Genuine Brother toner
cartridges are produced with a specific amount of toner to yield the
TN starter toner cartridge -
approx. 700 pages*
TN420 toner cartridge -
approx. 1,200 pages*
TN450 toner cartridge -
approx. 2,600 pages*
*The approximate toner yield
is in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752.
NOTE: The Toner LED may begin to flash to indicate "Toner
Low" status when the remaining life of the toner cartridge is approximately
30%. The message is intended to alert you that the toner cartridge is
approaching the end of its expected life, but the cartridge has not reached its
end of life. It is recommended that the toner cartridge continue to be
used if the print quality is still good since the toner cartridge may have up to
30% remaining of its original estimated print life.
The number of pages that can
be printed with a toner cartridge is affected by several factors, including
paper size, number of pages per print job, amount of print on each page, font
size, and print content, such as graphics, charts, etc. It is important to
remember a typical printed document is one letter-sized (8.5" x 11") page with
4% - 5% print coverage.
NOTE: If you are using a machine that duplexes, be aware
that each sheet of paper is counted as two pages when the duplex printing
feature is used when determining the number of pages printed.
3. Are you using a
genuine Brother toner cartridge?
The toner yield described above is specific to genuine
Brother toner cartridges. We do not know the expected toner life of
non-Brother or refilled toner cartridges.
Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine
Brother drum units and toner cartridges. Each individual component is
designed to work with the others to ensure quality and reliability. Using
non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and
machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any
problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges,
If you are not satisfied with the print yield of the current
toner cartridge and want to continue printing with it, you may do so by enabling
Continue Mode. Refer to the solution - What
