Description of Solution 200000034048

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

1. Verify the paper you are using meets the recommended paper specifications:

Use paper that is made for plain paper copying or laser printing.

Do not use inkjet or thermal paper.

Use paper that is 20 to 24 lb (75 to 90 g/m2).

Use paper with a neutral Ph value; do not use acidic or alkaline paper.

Use long grain paper.

Use paper with moisture content of approximately 5%.

Plain paper: Xerox 4200DP 20 lb

Recycled paper: No specific brand recommended. Must meet DIN 19309 specifications.

Transparency: 3M CG3300

Labels: Avery laser labels white #5160

2. There may be glue from label stock or another substance in the drum causing the issue. Clean the drum unit by following the steps below:

a. Press the cover release button on the top right side of the machine and then open the front cover.

b. Pull out the drum and toner assembly.

NOTE: We recommend that you place the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

c. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the blue lock lever on the right side of the drum unit and lifting the toner out.

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

d. Inside the drum unit where the toner cartridge was inserted there is a shiny, reddish-brown roller. This is the photosensitive drum cylinder which transfers toner from the cartridge onto the paper in the form of the image to be printed.

NOTE: The surface of the drum cylinder is very sensitive and should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Other types of light may also damage the drum cylinder if it is exposed for prolonged periods.

e. Using a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, gently wipe across the surface of the drum cylinder. Rotate the black gear on the far left side of the drum cylinder. Clean each new section of the drum cylinder surface as it rotates into view until the full circumference has been cleaned.

If a soft, lint-free cloth is not available, we recommend using a cotton swab instead. Do not use paper towels or facial tissues as these are likely to leave lint and added lotions on the drum surface which may result in poor print quality.

NOTE: Do not use a scrubbing motion as this may damage the drum cylinder permanently.

f. Reinstall the toner cartridge into the drum unit. The toner cartridge will click/lock into place when set correctly.

g. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab located at the top of the drum unit, from left to right several times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

h. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the machine.

i. Close the front cover.

3. Print a Test Page to test the print quality.

a. Press the PLUS OR MINUS keys to select Information. Press SET.

b. Press the PLUS OR MINUS keys to select Print Test. Press SET. A page should print.

4. If the issue is not resolved, clean the drum and test again by repeating STEP 2.

5. If the issue still is not resolved, the drum unit (DR600) will need to be replaced.

The drum and toner warranty covers manufacturing defects for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase or the rated life of the consumable, whichever occurs first.
