How do I clear the message "Replace Toner" from the display?

Description of Solution 200000035177

The message "Replace Toner" indicates a toner cartridge is at its end of life or the developer roller has reached its upper limit of rotations.  This means the toner cartridge needs to be replaced.  In order to clear the message, install a brand new, out-of-the box, Brother toner cartridge.

DO NOT install a starter toner (toner provided in the box with new machines) or a previously used or installed toner cartridge from another machine to clear the message.  Our standard toner cartridges are manufactured with a reset lever that moves when installed into the machine.  The movement of the lever is what notifies the machine a new cartridge has been installed and mechanically triggers the machine to reset the "Replace Toner" indicator.  If a starter toner or a used cartridge is installed into a machine that needs to be reset, the message will not clear.  The starter toner does not have the lever to reset the message and a used cartridge lever is not in the proper position to trigger the machine to reset.

If you use a non-Brother toner cartridge, Brother cannot guarantee the performance of the toner since Brother is not the manufacturer.  Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and toner cartridges.  Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the others to ensure quality and reliability.  Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability.  The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third-party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

1. Updating the firmware on the machine may improve toner yield and reduce the frequency of the toner replacements.  Please understand that the firmware update is not guaranteed to improve yield. For more information, please refer to the solution How do I perform a firmware update or firmware upgrade on my Brother machine?

2. For instructions to replace the toner cartridge, refer to the solution How do I install a new toner cartridge? How do I replace the toner cartridge?

3. If one of the color cartridges has reached the end of its life, you can still receive faxes and make copies in black and white.  You can also print from your computer by choosing Mono in the printer driver.  This will allow you to keep printing as long as the Black toner does not reach its end of life.  For instructions to print in mono from the computer, refer to the solution Can my Brother machine print in black and white if my color toner cartridges are empty?
