- If the LCD is blank, continue to the next step.

2.  Verify the Brother machine's power switch is in the ON position.  The machine has an ON/OFF switch located on the right side of the Brother machine.  When the small circle on the switch is pressed, the Brother machine will be OFF.  When the small dash ( - ) on the switch is pressed, the Brother machine will be ON.

3.  Verify the power cord is connected to the back of the Brother machine and directly to the AC power outlet.  If the power cord is connected to a surge protector or power switch, unplug the cord from the device and plug it directly into the outlet. Removing the device assists in determining if the issue (blank display) is related to the device or the Brother machine.

NOTE: To protect your investment against power surges and lightning, Brother strongly recommends that you connect your machine to a quality surge protector.  In particular we suggest that you use a surge protector that is compatible with both standard AC power cords and telephone line cords. Surge protectors equipped with telephone jacks will assist in insulating your machine from any power surge that might travel through a telephone line.

- YES. Continue to STEP 6.

- NO. Continue to STEP 5.

5.  Open the front cover.

- If the Error light to the left of the LCD is flashing orange, close the front cover and continue to STEP 6.

- If the Error light to the left of the LCD is off, close the front cover and continue to STEP 7.

6.  Adjust the contrast of the LCD:

a.  Press MENU, 1 (General Setup), 7 (LCD Contrast).

b.  Press the RIGHT ARROW key to make the LCD darker or the LEFT ARROW key to make the LCD lighter.

c.  Press OK and then STOP/EXIT.

7.  Verify the outlet is working by plugging a device (a working lamp, radio etc.) directly into the same outlet.  If that device does not work, the problem is related to the outlet or circuit. Another test would be to connect the Brother machine to a completely different outlet.
