The printed pages have smudges or dots. How can I improve the print quality?

Description of Solution 200000037927

1. Print User Settings by pressing MENU, 6 (Print Reports), 4 (User Settings), START to print the User Settings List.

- If blurry print appears, regardless if dots or smudges are present, continue to STEP 2

-  If no dots appear, the issue is resolved.

-  If dots appear on the Printer Settings page, continue to STEP 2.

2. To better identify the print quality click the link below to review the print sample pages:

http://support.brother.com/g/b/imglist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc8710dw_us&ptn=1

-      If the print is blurry, go to STEP 10c.

-      If the print is NOT blurry, match the dot type with the print samples and go to STEP 4.

 3.  Dots are typically caused by foreign material inside the machine (for example, paper dust, glue from labels or envelopes, paper clips, staples) sticking to or damaging the surface of the drum. Toner builds up on or sticks to these areas on the drum and creates black dots on the printed pages.

4.  Do the following to clean the drum unit.

a.  Disconnect all cables and cords and then unplug the power cord from the machine.

b.  Open the front cover of the machine.   Then, lift the drum unit up and pull it out of the machine.

NOTE: Be sure to place the drum unit on a clean, flat surface on top of a piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering toner.  If you get toner on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

c.  Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the green lock lever on the left side of the drum unit and lifting the toner out.

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on hands or clothing, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

d.  Turn the drum unit over. Make sure the white drum unit gear(1) is on the left hand side.

e.  Use the Drum Dot Check Sheet and the numbered markers above the drum roller to determine the area of the drum roller that requires cleaning:

-  The Drum Dot Check Sheet has 6 numbered columns. The number of the column with the printed dot(s) or mark is used to find the dot or mark position on the drum unit. Confirm the suspected area on the drum by using the numbered markers above the drum roller to locate the mark on the surface of the drum. See image below.

Caution

-      The drum is photosensitive so DO NOT touch it with your fingers.

-      DO NOT clean the surface of the photosensitive drum with a sharp object.

-      DO NOT use a scrubbing motion because this might damage the drum.

f.  Turn the white drum unit gear toward you by hand while looking at the surface of the suspected area.

g.  When you find the mark on the drum surface that matches the drum dot check sheet, wipe the surface of the drum with a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol(91% strength alcohol is preferred, but 70 - 75% strength alcohol is also acceptable).  Allow the alcohol to evaporate or dry off the surface before continuing further.  Be sure to look over the entire drum as there may be several areas on a drum that need cleaning.

As a precaution please note: Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and should be kept away from fire or flame.  As stated, this cleaning process typically has to be repeated several times to remove certain kinds of foreign material from the drum unit surface.

NOTE:  DO NOT clean the surface of the photosensitive drum with a sharp object.

h.  Turn the drum unit over. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab located the top of the drum unit, from left to right several times. Return the green tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

5. Reinstall the toner into the drum (be sure it clicks into place). If you put it in properly, the green lock lever will lift automatically.

6.    Reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the machine and close the front cover, pressing firmly on each side until the cover clicks into place.

7.  Plug the power cord back into the machine and then reconnect all other cables and cords.

8.  To further clean the drum and remove any materials that may not have been completely wiped away when the drum surface was manually cleaned, make 10 blank copies of a clean sheet of white paper inserted into the ADF.

9.  Print a Drum Dot Check Sheet by pressing MENU, 6 (Print Reports), 6 (Drum Dot Print). START.

10.  Compare the Drum Dot Check Sheet to previous print outs with the dots to see if the print quality has improved.

a. If the issue is the same or the quality has improved, but the issue is still visible, you will need to repeat the cleaning process.  Performing multiple cleanings has been very successful.

b. If the print quality issue continues after multiple cleanings, the drum will need to be replaced.  The part number for the drum is DR720.  If you find that your retailer does not carry the specific supplies and accessories you are looking to locate, you can purchase them by calling our toll free Accessory Line on 1-877-552-MALL (6255) or shop on-line at our website at http://www.brothermall.com.

c. Examine the print quality of the text characters and horizontal lines on each of the pages of the User Settings List.  Does any of the print appear to have a shadow or to be smeared downwards?

- If NO, determine the type of print quality issue and refer to the correct solution for that issue.

- If YES and your machine is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center (ASC) in your area by clicking on the link below:
