How do I clear white vertical lines or streaks on printed documents?

Description of Solution 200000039749

White vertical lines or streaks can be caused by a dirty or clouded LED head, or dust or glue on the drum surface.  To identify if the LED head or drum could be causing the issue, follow steps below.

1. Click on link below to open and print a test document. The document that is printed has 4 diagonal black, yellow, magenta, and cyan colored lines.

2. Review the printed document to identify which color is missing. For example, if the white line or streak is only going through the cyan color line, then the LED head and drum unit for cyan color needs to be cleaned.

3. Clean the LED head.

a. Lift the top cover using the indented handle in the center until you hear a click.

NOTE: Failure to completely open the top cover when removing and installing consumables may cause severe damage to the machine. The top cover is completely open when the cover locks in place and does not require support from you.

b. The LED heads are located on the top cover. There are 4 LED heads, one for each color.  When the top cover is completely opened the 4 LED's are locked in a slanted position. To clean the LED, lower the top cover slightly down so the 4 LED's move to a vertical position.

c. Clean the LED that is causing the problem as identified from the test pattern. Locate the white or cream color piece; wipe the bottom of that piece using a soft dry, lint-free cloth. The yellow color LED is closest to the front of the machine, followed by magenta, cyan and black.

NOTE: Be careful not to touch the bottom of LED head with your fingers.

d. Close the top cover of the machine. You will hear a loud click when the top cover is closed firmly.

f. Print your document again. If the problem continues, go to the next step to clean the drum unit.

4. Clean the drum unit.

a. Lift the top cover using the indented handle in the center until you hear a click.

NOTE: Failure to completely open the top cover when removing and installing consumables may cause severe damage to the machine. The top cover is completely open when the cover locks in place and does not require support from you.

b. Review the test document to identify the color causing the problem. The drum unit of the color line that has a white line or streak should be cleaned. For example, if the white line or streak on the test pattern is on the cyan color line, you should clean the drum unit for cyan.

c. Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly of the color causing the problem out of the machine. The drum unit and toner assembly can be removed by grasping the center of the drum and toner assembly and pulling it straight up.

NOTE: We recommend that you place the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a clean flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

d. Push down the green-labeled lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

e. Turn the drum unit as shown in the picture below upside down.

f. Put the print sample in front of the drum unit and find the exact position of the poor print.

g. Turn the edge of the drum unit toward you by thumb or finger while also looking at the surface of the drum unit for any dust, label, or glue like substance on the drum unit roller.

h. When you have found the mark on the drum that matches the print samples, wipe the surface of the drum with a dry cotton swab until the dust or glue on the surface comes off. If unable to locate any dust or glue on the surface, wipe the drum surface using a soft dry cloth dampen in isopropyl alcohol.

i. Put the toner cartridge back firmly into the drum unit. You will hear it lock into place.

j. Slide the drum and toner cartridge assembly into the Brother machine. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the Brother machine.

k. Close the top cover of the machine. You will hear a loud click when the top cover is closed firmly.

5. Print your document to see if issue is resolved.
