Description of Problem 100000034471

The printed pages are faint, light, or faded. How do I improve print quality?

Description of Solution 200000044194

1.    Verify the paper is plain, multi-purpose or recycled paper and the paper weight is 16 - 24 lb.

-      If the paper meets these specifications, go to STEP 2.

-      If the issue only occurs when printing on thick or special media, refer to the solution - How do I print envelopes, labels, or thick paper from the multi-purpose tray (MP tray)?

2.    Press MENU, 6 (Machine Info.), 4 (User Settings), START to print the User Settings List.

-      If the print quality is fine on the User Settings List pages, the reported issue can be resolved by adjusting the Print Density and Toner Save options in the printer driver.  Refer to the appropriate solution for the customer's computer operating system:

How do I adjust the default preferences of my printer driver in Macintosh?

-      If the print quality is poor on the User Settings List pages, go to STEP 3.

3.    Closely examine the printed text and horizontal lines on each of the pages of the Printer Settings report.  Does any of the print appear to have a shadow or to be smeared downwards? See example below.

-      If print is smeared, shadowed, blurry or fuzzy and your machine is within warranty, you can contact Brother Customer Service by calling 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

-      If your machine is out of warranty, Brother may extend the warranty for this issue.  You can contact Brother Customer Service using the information listed above.

-      If the print is faint but not blurry at all, go to STEP 4.

4.    Check the Toner Save setting by pressing MENU, 1 (General Setup), 3 (Ecology), 1 (Toner Save).

-      If Toner Save is set to On, press the DOWN ARROW button until "Off" appears on the LCD and then press OK.  Go to STEP 5.

-      If Toner Save is already set to Off, go to STEP 6.

5.    Press the STOP/EXIT button to exit the current menu and then press MENU, 6 (Machine Info.), 4 (User Settings), START to print the User Settings List.

-      If the print quality is good, the issue is resolved.

-      If the print quality is still faint, go to STEP 6.

6.    Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

NOTE: We recommend the customer place the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case they accidentally spill or scatter toner.

7.    Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab located the top of the drum unit, from left to right several times.  Return the green tab to the home position on the left side of the drum unit when finished.

8.    Rotate the drum unit so you are facing the right-hand side.  You should see two small pieces of metal that look like staples aligned vertically and a metal rod protruding from the side.  Clean off these pieces with a soft lint-free dry cloth.

9.    Gently rock the toner from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

10. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the machine and close the front cover.

11. Press MENU, 6 (Machine Info.), 4 (User Settings), START to print the User Settings List.

-      If the print quality is good, the issue is resolved.
