How do I join the Brother machine to an Infrastructure Wireless Network?

The Wireless Setup Wizard will help you join your Brother machine to your wireless network.

 

PART I: Reset the Brother machine

 

Before configuring the Brother machine, we recommend performing a Settings Reset.  Refer to the solution - How do I reset the Brother machine to factory defaults? How do I reset the built in print server back to the factory default settings? 

 

 

PART II: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or wireless router

 

You will need to gather the following wireless network settings of your access point or router.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information.  

 

SSID or Network Name

The name of your Wireless Network or Access Point

Network Security Key (Password)

Encryption Key, WEP Key, Passphrase

Windows Users - Run the Wireless Setup Wizard from the CD-ROM

 

1.    Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

 

2.    If the Auto Play window appears, select Open folder to view files.  Go to STEP 5.

 

If the CD-ROM automatically runs and prompts you to select your model machine, click Exit.

 

3.    Browse to (My) Computer.

 

4.    Right mouse click the Brother CD-ROM and left click Open.

 

5.    Open the wlan_wiz folder.

 

6.    Double click the file BrWPrWiz.exe to run the Wireless Setup Wizard.

 

7.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

Windows Users - Download the Wireless Setup Wizard

 

1.    For instructions on how to download the Wireless Setup Wizard, click here.   

 

2.    Once the Wireless Setup Wizard is downloaded, open the wlan_wiz folder.

 

3.    Double click the file usa.bat to run the Wireless Setup Wizard.

 

4.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

Macintosh Users - Run the Wireless Setup Wizard from the CD-ROM

 

1.    Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

 

2.    Open the Brother CD icon.

 

3.    Open the Utilities folder.

 

4.    Click Wireless Device Setup Wizard.

 

5.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

Macintosh Users - Download the Wireless Setup Wizard

 

1.    For instructions on how to download the Wireless Setup Wizard, click here.     

 

2.    Click Brother WDSW.pkg.

 

3.    Follow the installation screens to install the Wireless Setup Wizard.

 

4.    After the installation, click the HL-2270DW folder.

 

5.    Click Setup Wizard.

 

6.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

Macintosh OS 10.10 Users - Download the Wireless Setup Wizard

 

1.    For instructions on how to download the Wireless Setup Wizard, click here.    

 

2.    Browse to the location of the downloaded software and double-click on the downloaded file "xxxxxxxx.dmg".

 

NOTE: The downloaded file is typically saved in the Downloads folder, which may be located in the Dock.  This location may vary based on your browser's settings.

 

If you don't find the Downloads folder in the Dock, click Finder in the Dock. Click Go on the Finder bar at the top of the screen and then click Downloads.

 

3.    Click Wireless Device Setup Wizard.

 

4.    If the following warning appears, click Open.

 

"Wireless Device Setup Wizard" is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?

 

 

5.    Close or minimize the window with the Wireless Device Setup Wizard icon to see the installation window behind it.

 

6.    Continue to PART IV.

 

 

 

 

 

PART IV: Join the Brother machine to the wireless network

 

The Wireless Setup Wizard allows you to join the Brother machine to the network using a USB cable, an Ethernet cable, or without a cable (Ad-hoc mode).  Select the setup option you prefer:

 

USB cable

 

Ethernet cable

 

Without a cable (Ad-hoc mode)

IMPORTANT:

-      Windows 8.1 is not currently compatible with Ad-hoc mode setup. Please use a USB or Ethernet cable to join the Brother machine to the wireless network.

-      Macintosh OS 10.9 and 10.10 do not have the option to install without a cable.

 

 

USB cable

 

1.    Select No to configure the wireless network card manually. Click Next.

 

 

2.    Confirm you know your wireless network SSID. Check the Checked and Confirmed box and click Next.

 

 

3.    Choose Temporarily use a USB cable (Recommended) and then click Next.

 

 

4.    Temporarily connect the USB cable (not included) directly to the computer and the Brother machine.  Make sure the Brother machine is powered on.

 

NOTE:

 

-      In Windows, this step may take a few minutes for the USB driver to be installed. You may see the Found New Hardware Wizard installing the driver in the task tray (bottom right corner of screen).

 

-      If the installation freezes at this point, verify the USB cable is securely connected to the Brother machine and computer. If it still does not continue, cancel the installation and select another method of installation (Ethernet cable or without a cable).

 

 

 

IMPORTANT: If a Java error appears, download and install the Java SE Development Kit using the link below.

5.    One of the following windows will appear depending on how your computer is connected to your wireless network.

 

-      If the Installation confirmation window appears, check the Checked and Confirmed box and click Next.  Continue to STEP 6.

 

 

-      If the Available Wireless Networks window appears, select your wireless network and click Next.  Continue to STEP 8.

 

 

6.    Your SSID will be displayed.  If this is correct, click Next to send this information to the Brother machine.

 

 

7.    Click Next. The settings will be sent to your Brother machine.  Go to STEP 10.

 

 

8.    Enter your wireless Network Key. Click Next.

 

 

NOTE:  If you receive the message Invalid Network Key, the network key you entered is not correct for your wireless network.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information or contact your access point manufacturer for assistance on gathering this information. 

 

 

9.    Your wireless network settings will be displayed, click Next.

 

 

10. When prompted, disconnect the USB cable connected to the Brother machine and computer.  The next window will automatically appear after the cable is disconnected.

 

 

11. The Brother machine is now connected to your wireless network. Click Finish.  Windows users continue to STEP 12.

 

 

12. If using Windows, there is second copy of the driver in the Printers folder. It was installed when the USB cable was connected. It is no longer necessary so it is safe to remove it. 

 

13. Open the Printers folder.  Refer to the following solution for instructions if needed - How do I open the Printers folder in Windows?

 

14. Right click on the Brother HL-2270DW Series (Copy 1) driver and select Properties or Printer Properties (for Windows 7 and greater).

 

 

15. On the General tab, click Print Test Page.

 

 

16. Verify the Test Page printed and click Close.

 

 

17. Right click on the other copy of the printer driver named Brother HL-2270DW series driver and select Remove Device or Delete (May be different depending upon your operating system).

 

 

18. Select Yes to remove the device.

 

 

 

 

 

Ethernet cable

 

1.    Select No to configure the wireless network card manually. Click Next.

 

 

2.    Confirm you know your wireless network SSID. Check the Checked and Confirmed box and click Next.

 

 

3.    Choose Temporarily use a Ethernet (LAN) cable and then click Next.

 

 

IMPORTANT: If a Java error appears, download and install the Java SE Development Kit using the link below.

4.    Remove the protective cap from the LAN port on the back of the Brother machine if it has not already been removed.

 

 

5.    Temporarily connect the Ethernet cable (not included) to the Brother machine and your access point.  Make sure the Brother machine is powered on.  Click Next.

 

 

 

6.    Choose the Brother machine and click Next.

 

 

NOTE: 

 

-      If there are no Brother machines listed, click Refresh.

 

-      If the Brother machine is still not detected, wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.

 

-      If after waiting 1 minute the Brother machine is still not detected, cancel the installation and select another method of installation (USB cable or without a cable).

 

 

7.    One of the following windows will appear depending on how your computer is connected to your wireless network.

 

-      If the Installation confirmation window appears, check the Checked and Confirmed box and click Next.  Continue to STEP 8.

 

 

-      If the Available Wireless Networks window appears, select your wireless network and click Next.  Go to STEP 9.

 

 

8.    Your SSID will be displayed.  If this is correct, click Next to send this information to the Brother machine.  Go to STEP 10.

 

 

9.    Enter your wireless Network Key. Click Next.

10. Click Next. The settings will be sent to your Brother machine. 

 

 

11. A wireless LAN report will automatically be printed.

 

 

12. Choose the status as it is shown for the Connection on the wireless LAN report. Click Next.

 

-      If your status is "Connection: OK", continue to STEP 13.

 

-      If your status is "Connection: Failed", the wireless security settings you entered are not correct for your wireless network.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information or contact your access point manufacturer for assistance on gathering this information.  Click Finish to close the wizard window.

 

 

13. When prompted, disconnect the Ethernet cable connected to the Brother machine and access point.  Click Next.

 

 

14. The Brother machine is now connected to your wireless network. Click Finish.

 

 

 

 

 

Without a cable (Ad-hoc mode)

 

1.    Select No to configure the wireless network card manually. Click Next.

 

 

2.    Confirm you know your wireless network SSID. Check the Checked and Confirmed box and click Next.

 

 

3.    Choose Advanced Method (Using Ad-hoc mode to configure the device for infrastructure mode) and then click Next.

 

 

4.    Enable to wireless netcard on the Brother machine.  Press and hold the GO button on the Brother machine until the Network Configuration page starts to print.  Locate the Node Type near the top of the page.

 

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7800w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active), go to STEP 5

 

-      If the Node Type is Brother NC-7800w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Inactive) or Brother NC-8200h, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX (Active), press and hold the GO button on the Brother machine again until the Network Configuration page starts to print.  Now it will list Brother NC-7800w, IEEE 802.11b/g (Active). Continue to STEP 5

 

 

5.    You will be changing the wireless network your computer is currently connected to.  Make sure to note your current wireless network settings (SSID/Network Name and Network Security Key/Password) so you can restore these settings after setup.

 

 

6.    To communicate with the Brother machine in Ad-hoc mode, the wireless computer needs to join the Brother machine's SETUP network.  Refer to the following solution for instructions if needed - How do I join my computer to the SETUP wireless network? 

 

 

7.    Choose the Brother machine and click Next.

 

 

NOTE: 

 

-      If there are no Brother machines listed, click Refresh.

 

-      If the Brother machine is still not detected, wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the SETUP network.

 

-      If the Brother machine is still not detected, cancel the installation and select another method of installation (USB cable or Ethernet cable).

 

 

8.    Select your wireless network and click Next

 

 

9.    Enter your wireless Network Key. Click Next.

10. Click Next. The settings will be sent to your Brother machine. 

 

 

11. Choose the status as it is shown for the Connection on the wireless LAN report. Click Next.

 

-      If your status is "Connection: OK", continue to STEP 12.

 

-      If your status is "Connection: Failed", the wireless security settings you entered are not correct for your wireless network.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information or contact your access point manufacturer for assistance on gathering this information.  Click Finish to close the wizard window.

 

 

12. Switch your computer BACK to your original wireless network, rather than the SETUP network. If you need assistance doing this, refer to the following solution, but you will select your original network instead of the SETUP network this time - How do I join my computer to the SETUP wireless network? 

 

 

13. The Brother machine is now connected to your wireless network. Click Finish.
