This is my 4th Brother printer, and I am very happy with the product.

This is my 2nd MFC from Brother. It is a great step up from the MFC-9440CN that was my work horse for 4 years, but suffers from the same drawbacks as the previous model - principally the high cost for replacement genuine toner cartridges.
One major new drawback is the very intrusive messaging system that pops up every 5 minutes to inform you that a toner cartridge is running low and WHICH CANNOT BE TURNED OFF!!
Other than that, the unit appears to be well worth the money - well built, easy to set up and operate, excellent quality documents, scanning (using Acrobat software) and fax.

1. Unpacking and setup of the MFC-9970 was easy - especially compared to other similar class machines I've unpacked and setup.
2. Workstation software installed properly on WinXP, Win7-64 and WinSrvr SB.
3. Scanning to PC works well - all PC's appeared in MFC control panel. Scanning via network is fast.
4. 2nd paper tray requires virtually no installation. Lift the printer up, place the second tray on the bottom, put the printer on top of the second tray, and it is installed and working. We use the second tray for 8.5X11 - holds a full ream. We use the top tray for 8.5X14 legal.
5. Printing is fast, with accurate colors and shading. 6 reams and still no paper jam - good paper handling.
6. The printer also handles multiple jobs quite well - no reboots.
Only two negatives; (i) the output "hole in the middle" is not well designed - difficult to get 8.5X11 paper out of the stacker, and (ii) it is not possible to simultaneously operate both wifi and wired network interfaces. We had to make a choice, and finally settled on the wired interface because scanned file transfers are much faster. Unfortunately, there are two workstations that can only be connected via WiFi, so the printer is not available to them.

I did a lot of research on what I wanted before purchasing the MFC-9970CDW. I have a mixed wireless network of apple MacPros, iPad's and windows based computers. Other than a couple of minor set up issues, I love this printer/scanner for my small consulting business. I needed something with speed, relatively low cost and reliability. The printer scores on all these features. The scanner works well in all modes, which was one of my biggest needs. I dumped my other other brand when they quit upgrading the software, forcing me to purchase a new piece of equipment. I won't go back.
