The Toner LED is on steady. What can I do?

Description of Solution 200000028991

Confirm the following to determine how to address the issue:

1. Does the Toner LED stay on or does it flash on and off?

- If the Toner LED stays on, go to STEP 2.

- If the Toner LED is flashing, refer to the solution - The Toner LED is flashing or the Status Monitor states TONER LOW? What can I do?

2. Is the Ready LED on?

- If the Ready LED is off, go to STEP 3.

- If the Ready LED is on, go to STEP 5.

3. Is the Error LED on?

- If the Error LED is off, go to STEP 4.

- If the Error LED is on, go to STEP 6.

4. Perform the steps below as a test to determine the specific toner status indicated by the LED:

NOTE:  The machine may begin printing at this point if there are any pending print jobs. If this occurs, the error has not been cleared and continue to Step 4a.

a. Quickly press the GO button seven (7) times with no pauses between each press of the button. All of the LEDs may flash two times and then turn off, followed by the Ready LED flashing briefly.

NOTE:  If there is no change in the LEDs, it is possible the GO button was not pressed correctly.  Again, quickly press the GO button seven (7) times making sure there are no pauses between each press of the button.

b. When the Toner LED is on again or if the Toner LED does not turn off in STEP 4a, check if the Ready LED is ON or OFF.

- If the Ready LED is ON, go to STEP 7.

- If the Ready LED is OFF, go to solution - The Status Monitor states CARTRIDGE ERROR or NO TONER. What should I do?

5. If the Toner and Ready LEDs are both on steady, this indicates the toner cartridge previously reached the end of its estimated life and Continue Mode has been enabled on the machine.  With Continue Mode enabled, the Toner LED will remain on (with the Ready LED) until the toner cartridge is replaced by a NEW genuine Brother TN420 or TN450 toner cartridge.  (Continue Mode allows you to continue to print using a toner even after the machine indicates it is time to replace the toner.  You can use a toner in Continue Mode until the toner reaches its maximum operational life and the LEDs indicate Toner Ended.)

-      Do NOT install a previously used or installed toner cartridge from another machine or a TN starter toner cartridge that originally came with the machine.  Our toner cartridges are manufactured with a reset lever that moves when installed into the machine.  The movement of the lever is what notifies the machine a new cartridge has been installed and mechanically triggers the machine to reset the toner life end indicator.  If a used cartridge or a TN starter cartridge is installed into a machine that needs to be reset, the used cartridge and the TN starter cartridge will NOT properly trigger the machine to reset and the error will not clear (the LED will remain on).

If you use a non-Brother genuine toner cartridge, Brother cannot guarantee the performance of the toner since Brother is not the manufacturer.  Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations.  Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

-      If you replaced the toner and the error will not clear after replacing it, go to solution - Why does the Toner LED stay on after I replaced the toner cartridge?

6. If the Toner and Error LEDs are both on steady, this indicates Continue Mode was enabled to continue printing after the toner cartridge reached the end of its estimated life and now the toner cartridge has reached its maximum operational life.  This means the toner cartridge must be replaced with a NEW, out of the box genuine Brother TN420 or TN450 toner cartridge to clear the message and continue printing.  (Continue Mode allows you to continue to print using a toner even after the LEDs indicate it is time to replace the toner.  You can use a toner in Continue Mode until the toner reaches its maximum operational life and the LEDs indicate Toner Ended.)

7. The toner cartridge has reached the end of its estimated life.  The Toner and Ready LEDs are both on steady now.

The Toner LED is on steady to indicate the toner cartridge has reached the end of its estimated life.  The Ready LED is on steady at the same time to indicate Continue Mode has been enabled.  Continue Mode is a mode which allows you to temporarily continue printing with the current toner cartridge if a replacement toner cartridge is not available.  This mode was enabled in the previous step (STEP 4) when the GO button was pressed seven (7) times.  Instructions for enabling this mode can be found in the Routine Maintenance section of the Users Guide.  Continue Mode will remain enabled until a new toner cartridge is installed or until the current toner cartridge reaches its maximum operational life which is indicated by the Toner and Error LEDs staying on steady (Toner Ended).

When printing in Continue Mode, we cannot guarantee continual optimum print quality.  In order to maintain consistent optimum print quality, we recommend you install a new, out of the box, genuine Brother TN420 or TN450 toner cartridge to clear the error and continue printing.  Do NOT install a TN starter cartridge or previously used or installed toner cartridge from another machine.  Our toner cartridges are manufactured with a reset lever that moves when installed into the machine.  The movement of the lever is what notifies the machine a new cartridge has been installed and mechanically triggers the machine to reset the toner life end indicator.  If a TN starter cartridge or used cartridge is installed into a machine that needs to be reset, the machine will not be triggered to reset properly and will not clear the LED.

-      If you replaced the cartridge and the error will not clear after replacing it, go to solution - Why does the Toner LED stay on after I replaced the toner cartridge?

-    If you are unhappy with the yield of the toner cartridge, refer to solution - I recently installed the starter or a new toner cartridge and I don't think I got the full yield from the toner? What can I do?
