How do I install additional memory?

The Brother machine has 64 MB of standard memory and one slot for optional memory expansion. You can expand the memory up to 576 MB by installing a dual in-line memory module (SO-DIMM). When you add the optional memory board, it increases the performance for both copy and print operations. The memory board is installed on the main board inside the machine via an access cover and no tools are required.

Visit the Brother web site below for the memory specifications for your machine and a list of retailers that sell memory.

NOTE: There might be some SO-DIMMs that will not work with the machine.

INSTALLATION OF ADDITIONAL MEMORY:

CAUTION: The memory can be damaged by even a small amount of electricity. Do not touch the chips or the SO-DIMM's board surface.  Whenever possible, do not perform this procedure in an environment that may encourage static discharges (standing on carpets, wearing sweaters, etc.). Wear an anti-static wrist strap when you install or remove the SO-DIMM. If you do not have a strap, touch any bare metal surface on the machine frequently to prevent static charge buildups.

To install additional memory in your machine follow the steps listed below:

1. Power Off the machine (on/off switch located on the right side of the machine).

2. Unplug the telephone line cord from the wall jack and then the power cord from the AC power outlet.

NOTE: The machine MUST be off and unplugged before proceeding. Failure to do so may cause damage to the machine or personal injury.

3. Remove the plastic interface access cover and then the metal SO-DIMM cover from the left side cover of the machine.

4. Unpack the SO-DIMM and hold it by the edges.

5. Hold the SO-DIMM with your fingers on the side edges. Align the notches in the SO-DIMM with the protrusions in the slot (the slot will only allow insertion in one direction).

6. Insert the SO-DIMM diagonally, and then tilt it toward the interface board until it clicks into place.

7. Press the SO-DIMM straight down into the slot (press firmly). Make sure the locks on each side of the SO-DIMM click into place.

NOTE: To remove the SO-DIMM, open the retaining clips on both sides of the SO-DIMM by pushing them outward, grasp both edges of the SO-DIMM and pull it straight out.

8. Replace the metal plate and plastic access cover removed in STEP 3.

9. Plug in the power cord and then the telephone cord. Power the machine back On.

To make sure that you have installed the SO-DIMM properly, you can print the user settings page that shows the current memory size.

1. Press MENU, 6 (Print Reports), 5 (User Settings).

2. Press START. The bottom right of the first page will list RAM SIZE.

3. Press STOP/EXIT.
