How do I configure the wireless printer and install the printer driver with an Ethernet cable in Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, or  8.1?

PART I: Gather the wireless network settings of your wireless access point or router

 

You may need to gather all or some the following wireless network settings of your access point or router depending on how your computer is connected to your wireless network.  Refer to the access point's user guide for instructions on accessing the network settings information.  

 

SSID or Network Name

The name of your wireless network or access point

Network Security Key (Password)

encryption key, WEP key, passphrase

 

IMPORTANT:  Some access points and routers have both a primary and guest network.  Guest networks allow access to the network Internet connection, but restricts direct access to the network.  The Brother machine should be setup on the primary network and not the guest network.

PART II: Reset the Brother machine

 

If you have previously configured or tried to configure the Brother machine on a network, we recommend performing a Settings Reset:

 

1.    Check that the front cover of the machine is closed. Turn OFF the power switch on the right side of the machine.

 

2.    Hold down the GO button as you turn on the power switch. Keep the GO button pressed down until all the LEDs light up and then Ready LED turns off.

 

3.    Release the GO button. Make sure that all the LEDs turn off.

 

4.    Press the GO button 10 times. Make sure that all the LEDs light up to indicate the printer has been reset to its factory default settings. The machine will restart.

 

 

PART III: Wireless Configuration

 

1.    If you have the supplied CD-ROM and your computer is running Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or Windows 7, go to STEP 4.

 

If you do not have the supplied CD-ROM or you are using another operating system, you will need to download the software from the Brother web site. Continue to STEP 2.

 

2.    For instructions on how to navigate the Brother website to download the Full Driver & Software Package, please click here.

 

3.    Choose Usa and click OK.  Go to STEP 6.

 

 

4.    Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, choose your machine. If the language screen appears, choose your language.

 

NOTE:  If the CD does not automatically run, browse to (My) Computer and then double click on the Brother icon to run the CD.

 

5.    Choose Install Printer Driver (U.S.A./Canada/Latin America).

 

 

6.    After reading and accepting the License Agreement, click Yes if you agree to the terms.

 

 

7.    Choose Wireless Network Connection. Click Next.

 

 

8.    Choose Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer. Click Next.

 

 

9.    Choose Change the Firewall port settings to enable network connection and continue with the installation. (Recommended).  Click Next.

 

NOTE: If you are using a firewall other than the Windows Firewall or the Windows Firewall is off, then click OK when you receive the firewall warning screen.

 

 

10. Select No when prompted to use WPS or AOSS. Click Next.

 

 

11. Click Checked and confirmed for the Important Notice. Click Next.

 

 

12. Choose Temporarily use an Ethernet (LAN) cable. Click Next.

 

 

13. When prompted, temporarily connect the Ethernet cable (not included) to the access point or router and the Brother machine. Make sure the Brother machine is powered on.  Click Next.

 

WARNING:  There are two ports on the back of the Brother machine. The USB port is the bottom port. The Ethernet port is the top port. Verify you are connecting the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port and not the USB port.

 

 

14. Choose your Brother machine from the list, and then click Next.

 

 

NOTE:

-      If the printer is not found, wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address. Click Refresh and the printer should now be found.

-      If the printer is still not found, verify the printer and computer are connected to the same access point or router.

 

15. One of the following windows will appear depending on how your computer is connected to your wireless network.

 

-      If your computer is wirelessly connected to the network, the Installation Confirmation window will appear.  Place a check in Checked and confirmed and click Next. Continue to STEP 15.

 

 

-      If your computer is not wirelessly connected to the network, the Available Wireless Networks window will appear.  Continue to STEP 16.

 

 

16. The installer will detect the network that your wireless computer is connected to and report the SSID (Network Name).  The installer will ask if you want to use these settings.

 

-      If so, choose Yes and click Next. Continue to STEP 18.

 

-      Otherwise, choose No and click Next. Continue to STEP 16.

 

 

17. Select your wireless network.  This information was collected in PART I above.  Click Next

 

NOTE: 

-      If the SSID is not found, check that the access point or router has power, is broadcasting the SSID, and that the access point or router is within range for wireless communication.  Then click Refresh.

 

-      If the SSID is still not found, cycle the power on the access point or router for about 15 seconds.  Once the access point powers back on, wait about a minute and then click Refresh

 

-      If your access point or router is set to not broadcast the SSID, you can manually add it by clicking the Advanced button.  Enter the Name (SSID) and then click Next. Enter the other required network information and click Next. Continue to STEP 18.

 

 

18. Enter your wireless Network Key and re-enter it for Confirm Network Key. This information was collected in PART I above.  Click Next.

 

 

19. Your wireless network settings will be displayed, click Next.

 

 

20. A WLAN report will print. It may take 2 minutes to print.

 

-      If the report shows Connection: Failed, refer to the error code and Solution printed on the report to explain why the setup failed. Select Connection: Failed and click Next. Click Finish to exit the setup.

 

-      If the report shows Connection: OK, select Connection: OK and click Next.

 

 

21. When prompted, disconnect the Ethernet cable connected to the Brother machine. The wireless setup is now complete. Click Next.

 

 

 

PART IV: Printer Driver Installation

 

1.    Click Next to continue to install the printer driver.

 

 

2.    Choose your Brother machine from the list, and then click Next.

 

 

NOTE: If the message No devices could be found over the network appears:

 

 

a.    Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.

 

b.    Click OK to search again.

 

c.    If the message still appears, please reset the router by powering it off, then back on.

 

d.    Wait 1 minute. It is very important to wait 1 minute before continuing. If you do not wait at least 1 minute, the Brother machine may not have enough time to join the network and receive an IP address.

 

e.    If the message still appears, please refer to The message "No Devices Could Be Found Over the Network" appears when installing the Brother machine on the network. What can I do?  

 

3.    The installation of the printer driver will automatically continue.  The installation screens appear one after the other.  Do not cancel any of the screens during the installation.  It may take a few moments for all screens to appear.

 

4.    The option to view the user's guide online is displayed. Click Next.

 

 

5.    When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, you can click Brother Registration and follow the on-screen instructions.  Once you have completed the registration or if you have already registered your Brother machine, click Next.

 

 

6.    When the first Setup is Complete window appears, you may enable (check) or disable (uncheck) any of the following settings as desired and then click Finish:

 

-      Enable Status Monitor on Startup: A software tool for monitoring device status and error notifications from your PC.

 

-      Enable the Network Connection Repair Tool: Software that checks for network problems and automatically attempts to correct them.

 

-      Set as Default Printer: Set this printer as the default printer for the current user.

 

 

7.    When the Software Update Setting screen appears, choose the software update setting you want and click OK.
